Happy Mondays : Greatest Hits

If you like Happy Mondays in any form you'll probably like this. Its got all the classics. That idiot who doesn't know why they put more than one version of Wrote for luck obviously has never seen them live, the dance version being the tune they ALWAYS played last. And Step On not being much of a tune! I beg to differ. The Mondays were pioneers with the likes of Weatherall and Oakenfold. Regardless of wether Pills and Thrills had commercial success, it's still a great Album and just because its successful doesn't mean that it's commercial. Anyway, this is still a great album wether in the car flat out(volume) or at home smoking with pals.

Bummed

The Mondays' second LP is memorable as it sees the return of Martin Hannett to the Factory fold on production duties. Hannett had previously produced the two Joy Division albums with devestating effects. He conjures up mixed results here, while The Mondays may have progressed significantly since their debut the sound here is strangely claustrophobic and murky.

As for the songs Country Song, Moving in With and Lazyitis are great efforts while Mad Cyril, Performance, Wrote For Luck and Do It Better are classics. The remaining three Fat Lady Wrestlers, Brain Dead and Bring A Friend are a bit run of the mill but by no means bad. This album swaggers and is so care free it could have only come out on Factory Records.

finaly we are getting an expanded pills n thrills... which is well over due and with some of the Mondays excelent videos. Hope we get the rest of the videos with the remaining 2 albums which have not been released yet.

Great to see the original, Factory Records, U.K artwork as well, looks like it finaly got licenced properly. Lol

Bummed (Collector's Edition)

So, with the recent Happy Mondays reunion and long-awaited new LP "Uncle Dysfunktional" release, it was to hope some inspired label would dare have a look back at the past releases of that seminal band who inspired so many other bands up to this day. "Bummed" (1988) and its more polished sequel "Pills'N'Thills'N'Bellyaches" (1990) are arguably the Mondays' best records (and for the latter, their most successful), so it's quite logically the first two to be reissued in the wake of their new found fame.

I chose to review "Bummed" not only because it's my favourite of the two, but also 'cause I deeply think it's still unique in its own kind 20 years after its original release. Two things make it a landmark record in British music in my ... Read More:

Squirrel and G-Man

Squirrel & G-Man was the Monday's debut released on Manchester's Factory records in 1987. John Cale (Velvet Underground) is on production duties, presumably because of the Velvet's drug history going hand in hand with the Monday's renowned intake.

The album displays a crude funk reminiscent of post punk funksters such as Gang of Four and A Certain Ratio. Cale concentrates on developing the funk by bringing the drums and bass to the front. What sets this album apart is the Ryder brothers Paul & Shaun. Shaun's guttersniping one-liners are well known and deserve all the credit they get but older sibling Paul's bass lines make the record listenable.

Uncle Dysfunktional

All the points I could make have already been made, so I'm going to cop out by just saying that I love this album.

The tunes are spot on, the lyrics are completely mad (which is good). It sounds like a band who are enjoying what they're doing and they've come up with something distinctive and fun.

I'd give it 6 stars if I could, to balance up some of the preceding naive reviews from people who were hoping for another Pills n Thrills. This is not a Zeitgeist album, it's a great album (apart from Anti Warhol).

This is part of the dubious 'Platinum Series' of compilation albums (which also includes Echo and the Bunnymen and The Communards), and none is more dubious than this one. Featuring a motley collection of the old, the new, the bad, the unexpected, b-sides, covers and classics, it's not what you would label a 'platinum' collection.

However, there are plenty of brilliant songs here that are worth listening to. The latter-day early-90s Mondays is favoured a bit too much, but you get 'Step On,' '24 Hour Party People' and one of the many alternate versions of 'Wrote For Luck' here, as well as an excellent cover of Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town' and the brilliant, string-augmented 'Judge Fudge.' Then there's the Beatles-aping 'Lazyitis...'
