Hater

by: Hater

Release Date April 01, 1995
This band features Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden, together with John McBain (guitar), John Waterman (bass) and Brian Wood (vocals).

I picked this up as a curio, being a huge Soundgarden fan. It's nothing like Soundgarden - much more lo-fi, stripped-down, chilled-out and quirky, but I love it. If you're familiar with Wellwater Conspiracy (Matt Cameron + John McBain), it's along the same lines.

It sounds throughout like the band had a lot of fun making the record - Mona Bone Jakon is a Cat Stevens cover, Blistered sounds like a hoe-down, and the lyrics of the last song are a caning of the guitarist: "Sad McBain, sad refrain. Sounds the same, should be ashamed". Despite the lyrics, this is a fantastic tune ... Read More:

34:13

by: The Body Haters

Release Date July 30, 1999
The Body Haters' '34:13' may well be Michael Gira's most extreme musical project, and that includes the brutal nihilism of his early Swans material, because the listener is left with the impression of a recording utterly devoid of human input.

This CD is one lengthy piece of mechanised and manipulated sounds, droning and industrial rumblings with only changes in tone, pitch and pace, sometimes gradual, sometimes sudden, to provide variety and reference points. '34:13' sounds like it could have been produced entirely by machines and I suppose that is the intention.

Possessing none of the traditional criteria by which one may judge music, indeed many listeners may doubt that this should be called music at all, can it be ... Read More:
