I agree with all the other reviews on the album , well nearly all . As my title says , why for Gods sake did H.Hancock and co put this has been in on what is a good listening album - but Leonard "let me open a vein to" Cohen on a Jazz album !!???? He can't sing - never could , never will , and the only reason that I can think of why he's on this album is because he's from Canada . The track is not "interesting" it's bloody awful and the producers should hang thier heads in shame .

Like the sea itself, Maiden Voyage is vast and epic- flirting with adventure and myth. It is Herbie Hancock's tour de force- what the wonderous Speak No Evil was to his Blue Note peer, Wayne Shorter- ie. representing the composer/pianist at his imaginitive peak. We can only imagine what kind of zone Freddie Hubbard, George Coleman, Ron Carter and Tony Williams must have been during the recording of this masterpiece- so wonderfully coherent yet brimming with subtle musical conflict. And Hancock's playing is simply majestic.
The opening track is stunningly simple- you might feel a little uninspired by the low-key opening, but then, all of a sudden, it all opens out beautifully during the trumpet solo. This short flourish embodies the ... Read More:

Recorded in the late 70's, but only widely issued fairly recently, the piano is an essential disc for fan's of herbie hancock. Whilst not necessarily the first cd a curious listener should pick up (blue note discs like maiden voyage and empyrian isles, or the funky headhunters album are the best starting place), it comes highly recommended.
Basically falling into 2 sections, the cd consists of 3 unique readings of jazz standards (my funny valentine, someday my prince will come and on green dolphin street) and 4 originals. The approach to the standards is very laid back and modern in outlook (especially in terms of the voicing) , but with the driving sense of ryhthm common to herbie's playing.
The originals show the most stylistic variety. ... Read More:

Empyrean Isles by Herbie Hancock could be viewed as a warm up for Maiden Voyage, universally accepted as one of the greatest jazz albums ever produced. On Empyrean Isles, the celebrated Hancock/Carter/Williams rhythm section (working in Miles Davis's band at the time) combine with the artistry of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, (the whole group, together with saxophonist George Coleman, recorded Maiden Voyage) who provides an interesting contrast to Davis, with his more aggresive, Coltrane-influenced take on Hard Bop trumpet playing. The aggressive opener 'One Finger Snap' is pure floating groove as generally associated with the rhythm section, while Oliquoi Valley takes a more relaxed but still powerful bent as Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock show their affinity for one ... If I had to give one reason for buying this album, it would be the track "Four a.m." It is one of Jaco Pastorius's best recorded performances. It must been one of those days when Jaco turned up clean and sober to a recording session and really engaged with the music. When you listen to him play like this, you are reminded of what a total genius he was; it also makes his needless and tragic death all the more galling.

For a long time this album was only available at collector's fairs (on vinyl - and costly) or as part of a triple-album CD compilation (along with Mwandishi and Crossings). To finally be able to buy, and at a bargain price, one of the greatest albums ever made (I almost said "in the seventies") is a blessed relief. Why oh why did it take Warner so long to get this one out again on it's own? This album is not as cleanly recorded as Headhunters, but the saturated and slightly distorted deep-fried funk is so greasy that even digital sanitising has been unable to clean up these artery-clogging grooves. Most of the tunes are rambling bluesy fonk, over which various jazz maestros give their chops a work- out worthy of an olympic athlete ... Read More:
