looking for an overview of Buddy Holly's work? They don't come much better than this. We can all wish this one was in there or that, but someone somewhere had to make a decision on what went in and what didn't. The result is a good all round representation of the skill, the talent, the sheer joy that was Buddy Holly's music. It is hard to believe all this happened in just 18 months. If anyone ever left a legacy, he did.

The Hollies are often overlooked in favour of The Beatles and The Kinks - true they didn't write all their own material and they followed trends rather than set them - but the bands melodic brand of harmony driven, guitar power-pop definately deserves reinvestigation. Lead by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash, The Hollies scored hit after hit through the mid to late 60's and even enjoyed belated chart action with the gorgeous 'Air That I Breath' in 1973. That their influence can be heard decades later with the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Dodgy and latterly The Feeling, is testiment to the quality of the singles compiled on this collection. This was the collection of Buddy songs that went round my old school in the seventies! Back then I didn't know who Buddy holly was, it sort of fitted in with the Diana Ross and the Supremes LP. The Beach Boys twenty golden Greats LP and Simon and Garfunkles Greatest hits LP I memories of nicking them fron Woolworths come flooding back!
This is a great record!! Think it Over is especially fine!!

I first heard Buddy Holly when I was a schoolboy in the late '50s. It may be difficult for today's teenagers to understand his impact, but Buddy changed our lives forever. He looked geeky but was great. He gave us hope and made us dream on. He wrote about our lives in his songs. Some of us got hold of cheap guitars and learned a few chords to play Oh Boy!, Peggy Sue, Not Fade Away and That'll Be The Day mainly trying to impress the girls. OK, well maybe we didn't win 'em over quite so easily, but Buddy provided the soundtrack to our lives for a while. Then unbelievably he was gone. This is a great CD, I LOVE it. It has all the fab Holly songs on it with the exception of a particular favourite of mine - 'Cut across Shorty' a B side, i know, but should have been 'A' in my opinion. Oh well, you can't have everything I suppose. Anyway, I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys great music.I know I do and this is my idea of perfection.

Dirt Don't Hurt

UK lo-fi roots goddess Holly Golightly's second release with the Brokeoffs (a "group" comprised of her associate Lawyer Dave on bass, vocals, percussion and guitars) is an amalgam of country, blues and folk that sputters and clanks like a well-worn jalopy on a dusty back road. The opening "Bottom Below" scrapes along on string bass, dobro, banjo plucks and percussive slaps seemingly struck by a string tied to a one-man band's ankle. Lawyer Dave sings the low end of the duets in a gruff voice that's balanced by Golightly's girlish harmonies; imagine Richard & Mimi Fariña squaring off with Tom Waits in a junkyard full of percussive implements. The Chirping Crickets

A full half century ago, "The Chirping Crickets" by The Crickets was released in the USA on Brunswick Records (BL 54038) and it stands to this day as one of the great debuts of all time. (It was released March 1958 in the UK on Vogue Coral LVA 9081). Holly had had several 7" single releases on Decca throughout 1956 and 1957, but this was his first album proper. His group `The Crickets' (in a not-very-Rock'n'Roll manner) are credited on the back of the album sleeve as a `Vocal Group With Orchestra'! Yikes!!

This 2004 Universal CD reissue gives us all 12-tracks of the original Mono album remastered to gorgeous sound quality from the 1st generation master tapes by Erick Labson and then tags on 4 bonus tracks at the end. The extra tracks are the A&B sides of two singles in and around ... Read More:
