This album is a fabulous fusion of musical styles and instruments by top class musicians. The liner notes in this album are very helpful, it contains short, informative biographies for both Hossam Ramzy and Rafa El Tachuela as well as for Said Kamal (Egyptian violin) and Mohamed Naiem (nay and kawala). For students of drumming and percussion playing this is an essential guide to how it should be done, although it is also excellent accompaniment to not just belly dancing but also salsa and samba. For anyone who thinks that playing percussion is about 4/4 beats and hitting things, this should either inspire you or make you quit.
Despite no other instruments, this CD never gets boring due to the sheer dexterity and virtuosity in the playing. In fact turn up loud, get your lady to shake her hips and its downright exciting stuff. As a result of this CD I've pretty much given up on listening to 'western' pop and rock and have begun delving into Arabic, Indian, African and Latin percussion-based music. Open up your ears and you'll open up your mind!

The Best of Om Kolthoum

Om Kolthoum was, and still is, the most famous, important and best-loved singer all over the Arab world. This CD contains a selection of some of her best known songs all beautifully recorded and arranged. It makes both a wonderful CD for performance and is an essential teaching/beginners CD for those looking for an introduction into Om Kolthoum's music. The liner notes are very useful - there's a small biography and for each song there are some lyric translation notes which are invaluable as of course understanding of the lyrics is essential for getting the mood and feel of the music across correctly in choreographies. Overall, I found this is to be a fantastic CD packed full of wonderful performance music and so is great value for money. Highly recommended!
