Genre-bending Hot Chip have not only released some of the singles of the year but one of its best albums. As with Gorillaz and Gnarls Barkley recently, mid-way into the `noughties' we are starting to see some real wit and invention in pop music that may come to define the decade. `The Warning' finds them putting heart and soul into their curious mish-mash of folk whimsy, house and electronica. For all the sonics and low-fi trickery, and the comedy lyrics, there is beauty and genuinity shining throughout. Their songs are unconventionally tangential, with phases and subtexts, but pulled off with a playful insouciance that belies some of the technical brilliance.
After the abrasive aural assault of the opener `Careful' is the brilliant ... Read More:

3 and a bit stars as an album, with one 5 star song...
Yes, definitely an album for 'particular' tastes; never going to be 'mainstream' with a collection of songs like this.
Commendable for their 'experimentalism' with song structuring and instrumental/electronic arrangements.
However, I'm principally writing this blurb to tell one and all about the song called 'Baby Said' - it is an absolute golden nugget of a song tucked away near the end of this album...simple yet sublime...check it out.
Personally I find the vocals unique and engaging - the lead singer is an artist whose voice doesn't sound like a dozen others'...always refreshing...
And yes, as one reviewer said, t'was worth keeping an eye on ... Read More:

This one starts quite well, but soon meanders off and becomes fairly forgettable. The first track, Night Moves, brings you in nice and slow, then POW! Positive K with I Got A Man gets your hips and shoulders working. After that some enjoyable electronic noodling, which then lasts the rest of the album. It gets to the point I can't tell one tune from the next. Aside from the first 3 or 4 tracks, there doesn't feel like there is any direction in this mix, any energy, any variety. Don't get me wrong, there is track after track of great, great tunes, but considering how good Hot Chip are at creating fun, energetic and enjoyable music, this album is surprisingly flat.

Luminous green cd case aside (unfortunately a sign of marketing desperation)the long reinterpretation of "La Forme" is the highlight here. This may simply be due to fact "Aero" was released around 3 yrs ago in a plethora of 'dance' remixes anyway, and although the Hot Chip version is far more ambient/melodic (ie lots of dropouts/breaks) than these it still seems odd to release the track yet again. "La Forme" however was a minimilist track originally, almost like a long interlude, and the extra production here takes it to epic proportions. In this case I feel they've done an excellent job, even with the introduction of beats. For completists this is a must, for fans of dance music, probably besy avoid, or at least be wary. For those of us who want another new Kraftwerk ... Read More:
