I went to a great deal of trouble to pick up this album, for two of the scores featured - Howard Blake's The Duellists, and John Du Prez's Crimson Permanent Assurance. As a whole the album is of fair quality - the music itself is impeccable. However, some titles fare better than others under the auspices of the City of Prague Philharmonic - regularly used as they are the cheapest contractable recording symphony orchestra currently available. The Crimson Permanent Assurance suffers worse, unfortunately, from a hideously lacklustre orchestration (by Paul Bateman) and by a lack of musical continuity - the album states "Overture" but in reality it is nothing more than five minutes of snatches of melodies from the original 20 minute score. Tippett: Various Works

I discovered both my favourite albums when I was 15 and now I'm nearing 50. One of those was Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields renderings of Tippett's Double String Concerto and The Fantasia Concertante. There was a performance of the Double String Concerto broadcast from the Proms which I found breathtakingly vivacious and alive. I was hearing rhythms in classical music that I had never heard before. I went out and picked up the record the following day and thus came to my first hearing of the wonderful Fantasia Concertante, which peaks with what is still the most vast and spacious fugue I know, building relentlessly, teetering always on the verge of chaos but just held back until the great swooping resolution. This music is very good for a person such as myself,who at one time thought that BB MUSIC WAS FOR THE BIRDS.THEN I GOT THIS CD AND HEARD HOW A BRASS BAND SHOULD SOUND.P.SPARKE REALLY SHOWS OUT ON THIS ON. HE PULLS OUT ALL OF THE STOPS WITH TRICKY PASSAGES(THEY'RE VERY DIFFICULT AT TIMES,BUT ENJOYABLE TO LISTEN TO.FOR MY MONEY, HE HAS INVENTED THE BRASS ORCHESTRA WHERE EVERY PLAYER HAS A DIFFICULT PART TO PLAY.AS THE WRITER OF THE CD COVER SAYS P.SPARKE WAS ON FIRE DURING THE YEARS OF 1980-1988.IF YOU LOVE REAL BRASS BAND MUSIC AT IT'S BEST,THEN GET THIS CD FOR SOME VERY EXCITING MUSIC EVER TO GRACE A CD OF ANY KIND.

This CD is a collection of some of Steven's finest work with music to suit all. From exciting and up beat melodies, to slow romantic and easy-listening tunes. It starts with a bright piece, Euphonium Concerto by Phillip Sparke and sustains excitement all the way through. There a lot of hard, complex pieces in this album but Steven being the fine player that he is, make it sound as easy as pie! Also there are pieces in which Steven shows off and really lets his extreme talent shin through. A definate must have for all those Euphonium players out there! I could listen to it again and again!
