My first Humphrey Lyttelton 10 inch LP aquired in the mid fifties contained the tune Trouble in Mind and I still consider this the best rendition I've ever heard. I stil get goose pimples when I hear Humphs muted trumpet; he was a master and the 3 CD's just confirm the fact. Highly recommended as a memory of a great trumpeter.

Listen to "Feline Stomp" and see if you can keep your hands, feet and body still! This is only one of many superlative performances on this wonderful collection, a must-have for trad-jazz fans. On 'Feline Stomp' the band moves along at a relentless pace, but with grace, elegance and flourish. The crisp backbeat of the drumming, the Count Basie-like piano highlights and the driving bass make this one of the CD's stellar recordings. Other tracks feature Humphrey's masterful trumpet playing, and Monty Sunshine's soulful clarinet playing reaches to the very foundation of soul. 'Bad Penny Blues', 'Wally Plays the Blues' and 'That's The Blues Old Man' all rate 5-star, but then so does the whole darn CD! I live overseas and did not hesitate to order this ... Read More:

I've always loved Elkie's voice and know that with the right song she can always turn in a great performance. I also love traditional blues and jazz and have been a fan of this kind of music since I first came across Bessie Smith thirty years ago. However, I find these performances lack the kind of passion I would have expected Elkie to have for these particular songs. It isn't a bad album by any means but this vehicle steers too close to the middle of the road for my liking. Perhaps, it would have been better if it had been recorded Live in concert.
