I remember Dury mainly from the late 70s/80s era as enjoyed his moment of chart stardom which coinciding with the rise of punk: What a Waste, Hit me with your Rhythm Stick... I kind of lost touch with him since then, and discovering this excellent collection was a treat. It's bulging with delights, all for the price of a new pair of panties. Dury is a brilliant wordsmith and the Blockheads provide a unique backing which is a hybrid of pub rock, funk and reggae. Unlike most punk bands, the Blockheads are expert musicians and Dury is as adept a writer as the likes of Noel Coward - though somewhat more potty-mouthed.
As well as the old favorites, new discoveries for me were Razzle in My Pocket and Poo Poo in the Prawn (hilarious), ... Read More:

This minimally packaged reissue of Ian Dury's seminal new wave album from 1977 is a delight. The elegiac `My Old Man' and the profane `Plaistow Patricia' show that Dury was a wordsmith writing at the height of his powers. His backing band, that included future Blockheads members, also rose to the occasion. They demonstrate on New Boots And Panties that they were equally adept in providing raucous accompaniment (see the punk rock blast of `Blockheads') as twinkling seductively in the background (on saucy opener `Wake Up And Make Love With Me).

'New Boots & Panties' is one of the most original British rock albums with Ian Dury's well-crafted, witty and bawdy lyrics combining beautifully with the brilliantly tight musicianship of The Blockheads.
Even if you already own the CD you'll need this 30th anniversary edition for the short but stunning bonus DVD capturing Ian Dury & The Blockheads(minus their saxophonist Davey Payne who had other commitments) close to the peak of their powers.
'Sight & Sound In Concert' was my first encounter with Ian Dury & The Blockheads and I remember being mesmerised by their performance when I came across this extraordinary group on BBC TV in 1977. Why the BBC haven't repeated it at regular intervals is a complete mystery.

The original album is quite a strong album with all of the lyrical wit that Ian Dury had in spades, and tunes by Chaz Jankel and Mickey Gallagher. The album is not quite as strong an album as `New boots and panties', there are plenty of songs to rejoice about, `the Inbetweenies' & `Lullaby for Francies'.
I picked this album basically for the bonus tracks Ian Dury being someone who professed to a liking for singles as singles and not have those tracks appear on albums, and why not if the Beatles could do it? The bonus tracks on the album are the very strong singles `What a waste' the excellent 'Hit me with your Rythem stick' and `Reasons to be cheerful' both 7 and 12 inch versions. Also included is a bonus disc which includes a live performance ... Read More:

I've been a huge fan of Chas & Dave for many years and on that basis a friend told me to get this compilation. Wow what great music and I was amazed at how many tracks I recognised. Ian Dury's lyrics are pure class, very funny and although there is a lot of swearing it really adds to it. "Mash It Up Harry" and "My Old Man" for some strange reason give me confidence in myself. This compilation has helped me re-discover my sense of humour which had sadly become misplaced as is often the case with so many people these days. If you want to hear brilliant musicianship, catchy songs and be truly uplifted then this is the one for you...

The Blockheads were top dogs after the singles S&D&R&R, What a Wate, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick & Reasons To Be Cheerful, however, some lost the faith over DO-It-Yourself although it was an excellent cohesive collection of songs.
When Laughter came along though the knives were out for Mr Dury and the chinks in his armour came courtesy of a "minor" line-up change. Wilko Johnson had replaced Chaz Jankel (who was writer and arranger as well as guitarist and therefore Wilko could only partly fill his shoes.) The opening Sueperman's Big Sister seemed to put a lt of people off. The strings backing seemed to irritate people, they thought it was some sort of sell out, which it wasn't. Dury was never a straight ahead punk. There were the shows with Max ... Read More:

Released shortly before Ian's untimely death, this is a fine return to true 'funky music hall' Blockheads form. The music's tight, the words are funny / poignant / well observed and stand as a true memorial to Mr Doo-er-y's genius and to the musicianship of his band.
If you loved New Boots for its wit and Do It Yourself for its funk, you'll love this too......
