Can i just say from the product description that In Flames have nothing to do with At The Gates at all in the slightest.
I've been a mega In Flames fan since Colony was first released and have their earlier stuff too, before Jester Race there was Lunar Strain and Subterranean where the vocalist was of course Mikael Stanne who is now fronting Dark Tranquiltiy, who of course use to have Anders doing vocals for them, but that was back in their early 'death metal' days where they sounded way differen to where they are now.
So to their latest release,A Sense Of Purpose. How could you try and follow Come Clarity? well obviously they couldn't. The first 2 songs start off great 'The Mirrors Truth' and 'Disconnected' heavy and melodic ... Read More:

Well, there I was thinking In Flames had lost it after the dismal and uninspiring Soundtrack to Your Escape album, when they pull out a suckerpunch like this. Thought the insanely catch twin guitar harmonies of yore had been abandoned? Think again. Desperately pining for the melodic death stylings of "Colony" and "Clayman"? Rejoice! All these elements that made In Flames great have returned.
That said, another Clayman this is not. The production and songwriting owe more to "Reroute to Remain" than any of the previous masterpieces, and in a way this fills a space in between those two albums. The songs are more densely layered and twisty than Clayman, but not as off-kilter or experimental as Reroute, and I think as a whole In Flames pull it off, ... Read More:

The Jester race was the breakthrough for In Flames and made alot of people stand up and take notice with its majestic leads, chunky riffs and epic combination of melodic death and guitar hero power metal. An then along came Whoracle, which proved that they were a world class band and cememnted them in metals hall of fame
Whoracle takes the template laid down on earlier works to the next level. its slightly more focused song writing wise, and there's much less of an emphasis in trying to be overly technical. instead, we have a much more solid performance, with some really power chords and riffs as well as the traedmark dual guitar melodies. Fan favourite Jotun is a great example; infectious hooks (don't those leads remind you of Blind Guardian?), ... Read More:

superb album, in flames have somehow managed to make their death metal style screaming catchy at the same time.
Tracks to look out for:
*Borders and shading*
Evil in a closet
In search for I
My sweet shadow
*The quiet place*
All the above blew my mind, i hope they do the same for you!
Release Date September 09, 2002
Awesome album, has had me singing and listening non stop since i bought it!
Nice mix of hardcore screaming, synth and softer singing in most of the songs.
Favourite tracks:
System
Cloud connected
Black and white
Dawn of a new day and transparent are also great
Enjoy!

I'm always cautious when approaching hyped albums, albums which are labelled the best a band has ever put out and especially albums labelled as 'genre-classics'. Such albums tend fall flat on their faces in dissapointment or, as is more often the case, fall victim to their own hype in that, while not being bad, they cannot live up to their reputation. The Jester Race, however, lives up to it's reputation as In Flames best and a genre classic.
The beauty of the Jester Race comes from its simplicty;a heads down, riff heavy metal album of the finest calibar, which has, to my ears, an almost working-class work ethic in that it delivers solid, top notch metal tunes without being overly flashy or needlessly technical. Take, for example, the legendary opener 'Moonshield'. ... Read More:

It seems that this is were things started to go wrong for the band (or right in terms of watering down their sound and appealing to tasteless Ozzfest fans)
After three classic albums (Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony) it seems like In Flames have had enough of being edgy and aggressive and prefer instead to sound sterile and uninspired. For one, the its extremly over produced and hollow sounding. Secondly, Anders vocals changed dramatically. Gone are the harsh throaty roars and screams in favour of a high pitched girly yelp that's more common in emo bands. But all in all the band just seem to crawl along with no real impact. Even the twin guitar melodies have lost their glory. Bullet Ride bored the hell out of me, and while Pinball map is a great song, its one of the ... Read More:

You all know In Flames. You know the score with this band. Colony, while not drastically different to Whoracle, is a natural progression on the sound with tighter playing, more concise songwriting and generally its just a bit more together.
It also shows a great deal of variety. Embody the Invisible is a great opener with a wickedly cheesy lead and almost a punky feel to it. Scorn and Coerced Coexistence are classic In Flames which brilliantly show of a fetish for twin guitar melodies and uplifting leads. And then the title track with its tight grooves; a great head-banging number. The best has to be Ordinary Story and the brooding Zombies Inc, which show that In Flames can easily match speed and aggression with atmosphere and melancholy.
