Arabesque

Jane Birkin is a bundle of talent wrapped up in a stylish package. She's been hot on the model circuit, had a fun role as the villainess in the amusing Agatha Christie film "Evil under the Sun" as well as being the ingenue in the cult 60's film "Blow Up." Birkin married musician and composer Serge Gainsbourg and had a hit European single "Je t'aime, Moi non plus.

Sadly, Gainsbourg died in 1991. As a tribute to her late husband, Birkin has released "Arabesque." The North African-Arabic sound is intriguing, hypnotic and pleasantly mixed with French sensibility. Rendez-Vous

When you take a first look at the track listing, you notice two things. First, this album has been recorded in at least 4 languages (French, English, Italian, Portuguese). Second, it lines up artists as different as rockers (Brian Molko, Mickey 3D), crooners (Brian Ferry, Paolo Conte), established French stars with different styles (Alain Chamfort, Souchon, Etienne Daho, Miossec, Manu Chao, Françoise Hardy), independant newcomers (Feist) and bossa nova veteran (Caetano Veloso).

The Best of Jane Birkin

Less a reasoned review, more a personal memory. I bought this CD when I saw Jane Birkin play at the South Bank. Her final encore was an audience sing-along of "La Javanaise", which was still ringing inmy ears as I poured out into the London night.

Getting the CD home, and finally playing it, the last track is a live recording of an audience singalong of "La Javanaise" which either shows total attention to detail on her part, or just one of those happy serendipities. A Lacuna of cool. I hope it was the latter, though if it's otherwise, I'm in admiration too.

This is a fabulous album which is waiting for you to discover! Recorded in 1978 the album features the title track which is very catchy and fun. Also the beautiful Le Velours des vierges, which is in my opinion one of the nicest songs!. This album is fun, quirky and makes for great listening as per usual with Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin albums. Out of all Jane Birkins albums I would recommend this one!

This is a collection of French ballads and pop songs by the famous chanteuse of the sensual Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus). There are three duets with Serge Gainsbourg - the aforementioned classic plus La Décadanse and 69 Année Erotique, while Gainsbourg had a hand in writing and/or arranging most of the tracks.

The opening number Quoi was the theme of the TV series Cinecitta and the breathy English song Yesterday Yes A Day comes from the soundtrack of the film Madame Claude.
