Perfectly Clear

I was really looking forward to hearing this album. I have bought all of Jewels albums and her only slight notification in this country of the album "This Way" that got my attention. A lot of people critisized Jewel for 0304 but to me it was a near perfect pop record that only grew better as the album went on. Although her last album was heading towards a country market it had so many catchy numbers but i'm disapointed to say that this album has only about 2 songs i would recommend on it. This is full on country with plenty of the old twang in every song and to be honest it sounds rather dated. Something Shania would have done 15 years ago.

Spirit

I first bought Jewel's debut album, PIECES OF YOU when it was originally released, as I fell in love with her sinlge, "Foolish Games". However, apart from that one song, the magic she seemed to have over me fizzled out. Years later, I have returned to her music and chose SPIRIT in which to reaquaint myself. Now that I have the maturity, I now appreciate her for what she can offer.

SPIRIT is an exceptional album filled with songs that are the closet to poetry set to music than many other artists can ever hope to get. On this album, you truly are able to appreciate just how brilliant Jewel's voice is. There is a clarity to it and an innocence which few singers today can boast. Music From and Inspired by Batman & Robin

....It doesn't say much for the film then (please check my review for the VHS version of that). This album does have some tracks that don't really suit the character of Batman like the opening one 'The Beggining Is The End' By The Smashing Pumpkins, but there are also some nice tracks that seem a bit closer to the lead character's theme such as R Kelly's 'Gotham City'. There is also a track dedicated to music from the film which is a bonus as there was never an official recorded score to the film (which is odd for these days). It's very cheap on this site so even if you don't like the film, I suggest getting this as it's a good CD.

Pieces of You

The first time I heard Jewel was on daytime TV in the 90s. I took the day off work as I wasn't feeling very well. She sang You Were Meant For Me, and I was absolutely captivated, enthralled, for the few minutes she had the screen she had me transfixed, and by the end of the song I was in tears. After that I immediately ordered a copy of this album, and was elated to discover that every song on Pieces Of You was as magical.

Here was an Alaskan girl whose folk songs could hush the world. Her songs are personal and poetic, you feel privileged that she is allowing you into her world; a place of beauty, calm, warmth, and replete with teenage perspectives that are innocent and uplifting.

Goodbye Alice in Wonderland

'Goodbye Alice In Wonderland' is thankfully a return to form for Jewel. Her last album '0304', which I found to be a disappointment after the poetry and feeling in her past albums, has given way to this CD which provides the lyrics and feel that attracted us long time fans to Jewels music in the first place. Some of the tracks have been released as B sides on past singles but they have been reworked for this album. It takes a few listens to get a feel for it, but overall, this is Jewel doing what she does best, but I do feel it is slightly lack lustre and a pretty inoffensive, bland affair compared to the ideas and feelings in past albums. Thank heavens she's moved away from that 'pop' fiasco that was '0304', for that reason alone this is worth a buy. A solid four stars.

This Way

Dann Huff and his chums Jerry McPherson and Jimmie Sloas, who have previously collaborated on creating Amy Grant's cool rock sounds as well as many others - with layers of groovy electric guitars and memorable bass lines - brought their unique style to This Way, and together with Jewel's concise and intelligent lyrics and mesmerising voice make this a terrific sounding album. It has more variation than her previous works, a rockier feel, and while that might put off some fans who preferred her folk style, as it loses some of the raw edge, I think this is a natural progression from her earlier material.

I have been a big fan of Jewel since I spent some time in America and got into her music while I was living out there. She is huge in America but, sadly, not so well known over here which is a shame because her music is lovely. I hadn't been aware of this particular album until a few days ago when I noticed it on this site and decided to purchase it. I have several of her other albums and this one is definitely different! The music on this one is very dance-y pop orientated, which is not necessarily a bad thing, although some of the tracks remind me of more recent Madonna music, which I'm not a massive fan of, and to me this album is slightly patchy in parts and I found myself skipping some of the tracks! Jewel presents a Christmas CD that is both traditional and at the same time new, and is pure magic to listen to.

The first half of the CD is traditional songs, both sacred and secular, performed in a mostly traditional fashion. The beauty of this section is that the arrangements are minimalist and unique, making them seem fresh even if we've listened to other people do them every year of our lives. I especially like the guitar on "O Holy Night." And, as you'd expect, Jewel's voice shines on every song.

The second half gets into more uncharted territory, but it's still great stuff. She does two almost a cappella duets with her mother on "Rudolph" and "I Wonder as I Wander." The first one is great fun. My only complaint with the second is that they repeat the first verse three times instead ... Read More:
