Gentleman Jim - Definitive Collection

There must be at least 6 albums of this title yet the one I'm reviewing here is NOT any of them in spite of being misnamed as Gentleman Jim!Though its also called The Hayride Years
Its actually a live recording made with the cooperation of the Louisiana Hayride and is on a label in the U K called TK Magnum.Apparantly its also available in the States on a different label.
I discovered this one in of all places the local library and decided I had to send my penfriend Ginny Wright a copy as it starts off with an airshot promoting the Fabor label-and Ginny is heard on this along with other Fabor acts.
Trouble is it wasn't on the HMV computer so I had to order 2 copies from Ryans Country in Wales.

The readily recognized rich voice of Jim Reeves is as fine on this CD as any other of his numerous recordings, but here his special voice focuses on very special music - gospels. The CD is a collection of religious or sacred recordings made over the years 1958-1962 with Jim Reeves accompanied mainly by guitar and piano, and on some tracks with gospel chorus vocal support. There are many traditional numbers of which my favourites are "In The Garden" and "It Is No Secret" together with the jazz orientated "Take My Hand Precious Lord", and there are titles where tunes were composed especially for Jim Reeves with a total of 20 tracks in all. Gentleman Jim: Memories Are Made of This

Following the success of Gentleman Jim (a double CD containing all of Jim's big UK hits and many other classics), his British record company released this compilation. The first CD contains Jim's covers of songs made famous by others while the second CD is an edited version of his live album, On stage.

The covers show that, while Jim's roots were in country music, he recorded songs from a diverse range of sources. There are some country songs here, of course, including I fall to pieces (Patsy Cline), From a Jack to a king (Ned Killer) and Waiting for a train (Jimmie Rodgers). Jim Reeves was my father's favourite Country Singer. He owned practically all his vinyl collection, and bought this album 'Distant Drums' (one of Reeves's greatest and most famous albums) as a present to my mother for Christmas in 1966 (a lovely memento for me to have since both my parents are now dead) The Single taken from the album with the same name would become the biggest-selling 45 of that same year!

Jim Reeves had a voice as deep and as rich as lush velvet - and this album contains twelve beautifully sung songs as a testament to that - all of which are slow ballads with the exception of the somewhat 'jolly ' Snow Flake'. Fan's of the great Reevester will love this double feature. Two original RCA albums released in 1961 and 1962 are represented in crystal clear stereo and complimented by a nice little booklet that contains faithful reproductions of the front and back covers of both.

Talkin' To Your Heart was unique in its style. It's a dozen recitations by the great man who's early elocution lessons paid off. His recital of "Two Many Parties, Too Many Pals" - in which the main character is charged with prostitution, is very touching. Seven Days is another minor classic. Perhaps the most well known is the ghost-dog opus Old Tige which was a hit in its time.

The Ultimate Collection

This DVD is very rare. There are simply dozens of 'best of', 'ultimate collections', 'greatest hits', etc etc etc, Jim Reeves collections. But this is the best of the lot. The issue is, do you want the complete collection or not ?? Just about every worthwhile song he recorded is included in this vast collection, which is probably reflected in the price.

This DVD is very rare. There are simply dozens of 'best of', 'ultimate collections', 'greatest hits', etc etc etc, Jim Reeves collections. But this is the best of the lot. The issue is, do you want the complete collection or not ?? Just about every worthwhile song he recorded is included in this vast collection, which is probably reflected in the price.
