Live from Nowhere in Particular

This LIVE album from Joe Bonamassa is a welcome addition to any blues/rock collection. Powerful, gritty vocals compliment the beautifully smooth guitar playing. The album showcases both the Electric and Acoustic talents of Mr Bonamassa, which are equally top class. The comparisons to the blues greats of old are unavoidable - but Joe is a massive talent in his own right. He fuses all of the blues you know and love into a unique package, then sprinkles that Bonamassa magic. The energy captured on this album is electrifying, with stand out tracks being the cover of Free's Walk in My Shadow and Joe's Live take on Sloe Gin. Sloe Gin

I agree with Musicman. I bought Sloe Gin after reading the glowing reviews here and thinking I'd take a chance but I was seriously disappointed. Most of it is moody rather than blues, tending either to the heavy and overblown or the colourless and derivative - often in the same song, probably in the name of 'dynamics'.

Joe is obviously not a bad guitarist but he's nowhere near the brilliance claimed for him and on this showing his take on blues rock is weighted 90-10 in favour of the latter, with his slide playing in particular sounding very ordinary. Indeed, arguably the only 'proper' blues on the record is Joe's cover of Charles Brown's 'Black night', which sounds more than a little like the late Jeff Healey...only not quite as good.

Blues Deluxe

I have a wide musical taste but my first love is blues.
Knowing that he is normally a rock man,he like many others go back to blues.
All i will say is,if you are a Blues fan...buy it.
Jo reminds me of a modern day Johnny Winter(much,much underated guitar player by many)not only of electric but slide and acoustic.
I still have the fist vynil album i ever bought in 1968 by Johnny....still a stunning album!!...this will join ranks.
Along with great voice,stunning guitar some very nice harp playing on this CD.
Just wish i had that much talent when i was his age!!
Jo comes up trumps for sure....

You and Me

I don`t believe Joe has peaked yet - he is still developing as an artist but boy when he gets it right he is monstrously good. He reminds me of Clapton and Gary Moore the most but echoes of Frampton and Stevie Ray creep in here and there. BB King is an obvious influence.
Anyway he writes sings and plays with conviction and soul - his guitar is not overblown and fits the songs nicely and usually leave you wanting more, again a little like old Slowhand himself. High Water everywhere showcases a fabulous vocal, Asking around for you is a wonderful blues ballad, and I agree with others that Led Zeppelin`s Tea for one is a brave and unusual cover that is really well done.

Had to Cry Today

From the opening salvo of "Never Make Your Move Too Soon", Joe Bonamassa leaves you in no doubt what to expect from this album: race-tuned blues of the sort people used to play when "guitar hero" was a compliment rather than a put-down. Once again he leans heavily on the souped-up Marshall-type sounds of the seventies, but only in a good way. There are some classics in the making here: his re-working of "Reconsider Baby" into a minor key is a triumph, opening it up and creating a Stairway to Heaven vibe; "Revenge of the 10-Gallon Hat" (a tribute to the late Danny Gatton) is a jaw-dropping display of country-style picking at an almost impossible speed; the title track, written by Steve Winwood and originally recorded by Blind Faith, begins with the wonderfully ... A New Day Yesterday Live

So, a couple of questions: Do you like great, live, guitar driven music? Do you like to rock? Yes?.......then GET THIS!
This man, Mr Bonamassa, was born to play live, just pity his poor mother having to get the Les Paul out too! Frenetic stuff from start to finish, it is an incessant barrage of great, driving rock and blues when you just wished that you could have been there on the day to witness it all in the flesh.
Joe has evidently been influenced by much during his tender years and, indeed has taken on board a lot from this side of the pond too. Evidence his rendition of Cradle Rock - apart from Rory Gallagher - name me any other guitarist who has attempted to knock this one out - and knock you out he does! I don't mean that he has just tried to play in Jimi's style or used any of Jimi's actual recordings. I mean that he has quick hands and uses them to their full extent, in the way that Jimi did, and, if there was one thing borrowed from Jimi, he made his guitar sound like he was playing it underwater.
This is my next album purchase - I have fallen in love with it and i've heard it only once. For any fan of great guitar work this is an unmissable album.
