I like to listen to Jerry Anderson on BBC Radio Ulster, he's really funny (although when my English Nephew was visiting he couldn't understand a word anyone on the show was saying) and he plays nice folk music. I heard the song 'village green appreciation society' a few times on his show, and thought it was brill (I don't remember the Kinks version.) I surfed the net to find who sang it, and came across Kate Rusby - what a discovery! I bought this album on the strength of that one track, and have played it nearly to death already. I like all the songs, as well a loving Kate's accent (I spent two years in Leeds when I was at college, and it brings me back to those happy times.) Buy it. Play it. Love it.

Before watching Sharpe I had never heard of John Tams, and quite frankly my music collection was the poorer for it! This album is a fantastic mix of score from the shows and traditional folk songs of the period performed by Tams and his mate Barry Coope with an amazing guest performance from the wonderful Kate Rusby. A must have for all fans of John Tams, Kate Rusby, Sharpe and great British folk music!

Already being a big fan, maybe I'm biased but this has been on repeat ever since I downloaded it from Kates web site. Beautifully understated, soaring vocal, every bit as lovely as when we heard it at Hull City Hall earlier this year. Must be chart bound!!!
Release Date August 11, 2003
This is a fantastic CD by a fantastic artist. It's very like Kate Rusby's other work, but if you like that then you will love this CD.
I personally prefer it to some of her older CD's, as it has a lot of fast and memerobal tracks in it that you'll find yourself singing all day! Great tracks on this CD - "The Good Man", "Let me be", "The Blind Harper", "Young James". All the songs are uniquely Kate Rusby though, and it's a great addition to any collection!
Release Date November 05, 2007
Kate Rusby is a treat and possibly the most unsung performer in the UK. I own hundreds of CDs and very few of them continue to move me like "The Girl Who Couldn't Fly". From the teasing, light-hearted rhyme of `Mary Blaize' to the haunting simplicity of `Fare Thee Well', this album is a treat for the ears and a journey for the emotions. 'No Names' is the ultimate highlight for me, specifically because of Roddy Woomble's fantastic contribution. The vast space between Kate and Roddy's tones serves only to add to the bittersweet parting message that the song contains. This is a wonderful album that deserves much wider critical aclaim than it has received so far.

I bought this album because i stumbled across the song 'who will sing me lullabies' on youtube and well what can i say it's just so beautiful. Every song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end ( in a good way). I can't imagine anyone not liking this her voice is so brilliant and i love the way her accent shines through it's truly an amazing album.

I heard a bit of Kate Rusby when some of her music was used to accompany a TV programme and I rushed to my PC to get myself some of her music. When the CD arrived a visiting friend and I rushed to put it straight on, I just couldn't wait. Well, my friend stood there agog and summed the whole thing up - "Music to slash your wrists to" and I have to be honest that I totally agree. Apart from a lovely voice there was nothing interesting, outstanding, melodical or exciting about the whole CD and, believe me, I suffered for the cause. So if anyone wants a cheap Ten CD do get in touch.

This had to be one of the all time best Kate Rusby albums. It has fantastic songs and a lot of them are either fast and memorable, or slower but at the same time catchy. All the tracks on this CD are actually very well done, but the best ones have to be:
Sir Eglamore - it's a song about a dragon. Who couldn't love that? It had a really good sort of repeating line as well, that keeps the tune going and adds to the overall flavour of the track.
Radio Sweethearts - A sweet old tune about an old couple waltzing to a radio. You would think that it would be slow and set to a waltz it self, but it goes at a medium pace and has a veyr nice little melody to it!
I Am Stretched On Your Grave - Based on an old poem, this is by far the ... Read More:

I love the voice, the tunes, the backing vocals and instrumentation.
I REALLY love the Yorkshire accent - one of my pet hates is UK performers singing with US accents.
But I just thought the theeing and thouing was a bit overdone. I got the impression Kate probably has a mild Yorkshire accent, which she puts on overdrive when she's singing, and that, plus the overdone folksy, Victorian feel to the album can start to grate after a while.
There's been a lot said about 'mockney' media figures, and maybe Kate's the Yorkshire equivalent - Morkney?
Still, the music and the voice are great, and I look forward to hearing more, with a slightly toned down and updated accent.

A stunningly subtle album. The complementary features of Kate's distinctive voice with John's haunting melodies makes this an album to inspire all of us. Being a film soundtrack this could be considered a standard studio album but it can hold its own against the best in the market. The feast of talent shown by both Kate and John amalgamate to a mellow plethera of tunes to warm the soul. One could say an album to warm the cockles!!!!
