Over the Hills and Far Away: The Music of Sharpe [SOUNDTRACK]

from: Virgin

Release Date April 29, 1996
Before watching Sharpe I had never heard of John Tams, and quite frankly my music collection was the poorer for it! This album is a fantastic mix of score from the shows and traditional folk songs of the period performed by Tams and his mate Barry Coope with an amazing guest performance from the wonderful Kate Rusby. A must have for all fans of John Tams, Kate Rusby, Sharpe and great British folk music!

Awkward Annie

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date September 03, 2007
Kate Rusby has a lovely voice and the arrangements of this collection of songs are sensitive. What's not to like? Well there is one big flaw for me - the lyrics. It's partly that for a 21st century girl to be writing songs about maidens, knights and castles seems odd. This is not a complaint about people singing folk songs. Those songs were about their times but it's strange to hear a woman with her own website writing as if she were a medieval troubadour.

But it gets worse. One of the best songs on the album is John Barbury great vocal, lovely accompaniment. But the words get in the way. Here's an example. In one line a girl denies she looks ill because had "lain with a man". Then the next line explains she is "nine months gone" and ... Read More:

Underneath The Stars

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date August 11, 2003
This is a fantastic CD by a fantastic artist. It's very like Kate Rusby's other work, but if you like that then you will love this CD. I personally prefer it to some of her older CD's, as it has a lot of fast and memerobal tracks in it that you'll find yourself singing all day! Great tracks on this CD - "The Good Man", "Let me be", "The Blind Harper", "Young James". All the songs are uniquely Kate Rusby though, and it's a great addition to any collection!

The Girl Who Couldn't Fly

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date November 05, 2007
Kate Rusby is a treat and possibly the most unsung performer in the UK. I own hundreds of CDs and very few of them continue to move me like "The Girl Who Couldn't Fly". From the teasing, light-hearted rhyme of `Mary Blaize' to the haunting simplicity of `Fare Thee Well', this album is a treat for the ears and a journey for the emotions. 'No Names' is the ultimate highlight for me, specifically because of Roddy Woomble's fantastic contribution. The vast space between Kate and Roddy's tones serves only to add to the bittersweet parting message that the song contains. This is a wonderful album that deserves much wider critical aclaim than it has received so far.

Who Knows Where The Time Goes?

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date May 05, 2008
This is a truly beautiful rendering of an utterly beautiful song. Kate sings with her customary unpretentious clarity, and with that amazingly pure voice of hers. Andy Cutting's rhythmic accordion playing moves it along nicely, too. However, if you want to hear the definitive version of this great song, then I would recommend Sandy Denny's own version with an early incarnation of The Strawbs - which is just as beautiful but has that extra spark of passion. [And I say that as someone who does not usually believe in "definitive" versions of songs]. Having said that, this version brought a tear to my eye when I heard Kate sing it live recently - and it deserves to be widely heard.

Little Lights

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date June 04, 2001
I bought this album because i stumbled across the song 'who will sing me lullabies' on youtube and well what can i say it's just so beautiful. Every song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end ( in a good way). I can't imagine anyone not liking this her voice is so brilliant and i love the way her accent shines through it's truly an amazing album.

Hourglass

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date March 01, 1997
This had to be one of the all time best Kate Rusby albums. It has fantastic songs and a lot of them are either fast and memorable, or slower but at the same time catchy. All the tracks on this CD are actually very well done, but the best ones have to be:

Sir Eglamore - it's a song about a dragon. Who couldn't love that? It had a really good sort of repeating line as well, that keeps the tune going and adds to the overall flavour of the track.

Radio Sweethearts - A sweet old tune about an old couple waltzing to a radio. You would think that it would be slow and set to a waltz it self, but it goes at a medium pace and has a veyr nice little melody to it!

I Am Stretched On Your Grave - Based on an old poem, this is by far the ... Read More:

Ten

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date October 28, 2002
I heard a bit of Kate Rusby when some of her music was used to accompany a TV programme and I rushed to my PC to get myself some of her music. When the CD arrived a visiting friend and I rushed to put it straight on, I just couldn't wait. Well, my friend stood there agog and summed the whole thing up - "Music to slash your wrists to" and I have to be honest that I totally agree. Apart from a lovely voice there was nothing interesting, outstanding, melodical or exciting about the whole CD and, believe me, I suffered for the cause. So if anyone wants a cheap Ten CD do get in touch.

Sleepless

by: Kate Rusby

Release Date May 26, 2003
One of the most difficult things to do sometimes, when you have so many albums (whether vinyl or CD) to listen to, is to decide what to put on for your listening pleasure - depending on your mood at the time. Most often, it's a snap decision that informs you that, "oh blimey, I haven't heard this for years or you might hear just one track on the radio and repeat the previous line.

I got into Kate Rusby when I used to wait outside the church hall on a Wednesday evening waiting for our daughter to come out from her dancing lessons. I'd sit and listen to Mike Harding and have a listen for 20 minutes or so.

In 1997 the most beautiful voice came through the airwaves and I ascertained that it was Kate Rusby, a young lady from Penistone, south Yorkshire. ... Read More:
