This album exhibits certain innocence and sugary charm only possible for the 60's. Certainly it's cringing in a 'yeah man' way but it also has something less obvious that makes it quite charming.

I came across this album on another website, where it had been reviewed. Reading the review i was intrigued by the impression of weird genius but nothing prepared me for just how weird this genius is! The track that sums it all up for me is "Truth Mute", which takes the form of a phone conversation between Nordine and an alter-ego, who appears to be his subconscious.
They start having a most bizarre conversation. Ken, who is still half-asleep, seems to sense there's something odd about it but can't quite work out what. "Where did you say you were calling from again?" he asks at one point. All the time there is this eerie muzak playing quietly in the background - all the more disturbing because you can't work out whether it's ... Read More:

So is this crazy stuff or inspired? I don't know, maybe you need to be a true prophet to decide. The consolation is that it is GREAT FUN. I, being a Brit (but nevertheless a lover of Americans), have always been critical of the Americans lack of irony, but I can tell you Mr Nordine ooze's it! In some ways Ken Nordine could be dismissed as a musical oddity (I think one review likens it to William Shatners descent into musical madness) but for me he has genuinely invented a new communications genre. This is Rap for the Jazz fan, pop for the poetry lovers, and sheer bloody good fun for the rest of us. But do not dismiss this work as a triviality, for there is depth here. It is a bit like Nietzsche's emblematic abyss - the more you stare into it, ... Read More:

I'd never heard of Ken Nordine and only bought it for Tom wait's contribution.
BUT... I loved it form begining to end. Great voice, great words, great music. Randomness is rarely this beautiful and listenable. I feel that this is the begining of another special consumer relationship for me!

Pure entertainment --- if you know what I mean... Yes, this IS a GREAT tribute to John Cage who himself is and might always be one of the really greatest (not only american) composers. I personally dig especially John Cale's and Frank Zappa's parts: both great composers too. But you should listen by yourself... Just enjoy the entertainment!
