...give it a couple of plays, and play it loud. One misgiving: try not to listen to this on tinny little iPod speakers or headphones - they just can't cope with the omnipresent bass synth that rumbles throughout the whole album. You'll need a decent hi-fi for this, otherwise the whole thing distorts. I wonder how often artists think of this when they're in the studio?
(Incidentally, why has nobody else mentioned 'Burning Up' as a standout track?)

Witching Hour

Once upon a time, electronic acts were routinely dismissed for fetishising sounds at the expense of musical substance. It's ironic, then, that Ladytron have written some of the best songs of the 00s while the 21st century rock'n'roll brigade, largely concerned with approaching various sonic blueprints from yesteryear, have rarely managed to pen anything memorable, let alone lasting.

Ladytron's latest strike Velocifero is their best so far: 53 minutes and not one weak track. The opening `Black Cat' appears to merge three distinct Dario Argento soundtracks into one: a gothic keyboard motif reminiscent of Profondo Rosso, the mechanic 80s beat of Tenebrae, and the stomach-punching synth drum accents of Suspiria. I won't go on an on like other reviewers but just to say if your into Client and early Goldfrapp give this one a go.

Destroy Everything You Touch

2007 re-release of the 2005 single (due in no small part to the success of the video on youtube which sees the band molested by a giant two-legged toy dog up a mountain during a blizzard - part art-school project/part homage to The Goodies). A nihilist mantra of self-protection from emotional harm - and it's a right stomper. For about five minutes a few of years ago this would've been labeled electroclash, but since that train came and went without stopping "thumping, glacial, analogue synth masterpiece" will have to do. Like New Order's Touched By the Hand of God with its skates on and a coolly dispassionate vocal, it grips from the slow build intro then explodes. Single of the decade.

Groundbreaking....is the perfect word to describe the unforgetable debut ablbum by Ladytron. A few months ago I was lucky enouch to see them live as a support act for Franz Ferdinand in one of the Edinburgh festival concerts. When i first saw them i wasen't sure what to think but after I was bought their 604 album my opinion of them completely changed. The band have brought snynth-pop back to life and each song will stay in your head for days. Personal highlights of the album for are the the fun catchy tune "Paco" or the greatest electric record of our time, "playgirl" but each song will inspire you to buy an analogue synth and wont fail to make you dance around the room within a few minutes of the album being played. I can't see to understand why anyone would want to knock this album, just because 604 was a hard act to follow, doesn't mean Light and magic cant compete. The album itself has some vintage Ladytron songs thst define the band and what thy're about. For example the smash hit Seventeen or the more instumental Blue Jeans. Light and Magic is much darker than 604 and has more emotion and depth, it can remind you of goods with bad ones. My personal faveourite songs on the album include, the dark THE REASON WHY or Blue Jeans simple but effective FLICKING YOUR SWITCH. Most records on the album are sort of songs you hear in a stylish night club and sort of songs you'd always dance to.
