This is non-stop classic Madness: the album tracks are as good as their later hit singles; the melodies are superb; the arrangements enjoyable; the lyrics witty and the track-order runs like a non-stop don't-wanna-get-off funfair ride!
This was their last album before they went a bit serious, so anyone who loves the nutty, nutty sound might like this one best.

For the completist, I understand the few disappointments such as Don't Quote Me On That 12" being the wrong version, but I can kinda live with it owning an original 12" of it as least I can still listen to the right version. Missing also was the 12" mix of One Step Beyond found on the UK 12". I think the problem is the compilers of these collections never ask real fans to add suggestions, as we hard core fans know all the ins and outs of the records down to what's etched in the run out groove, so we pick up on mistakes quickly. For the money though Vol 1 offered a nice load of tracks and nicely packaged so was value for money... so to Vol 2.
Do you remember when record companies hated people downloading rather than buy the album? The ... Read More:

This is an excellent album, I bought it on the week it was released and still listen to it now. Its definately a mature madness album and I think recorded the peak of their songwriting prowess. The melodies are just beautiful, check out one better day, the lyrics deal with issues from homelessness to spousal abuse but with in a sensitive way that is not patronising but real. My favorite track is reggae dub tinged Victoria gardens which combines a wonderful lyric about the early days of Thatchers reign with a brilliant tune and their most ambitious ever arrangement. If you are a fan you must own this album I don't think they or most other bands have ever made a better one.

This album came in for some unfair criticism on release: were they trying too hard to "grow" and produce stuff that was interesting rather than fun?
Well this album is a bit of both: there's the spooky obscure stuff like "Falling Again" as well as the more jovial "Our House".
Non-fans might prefer the more hit-orientated earlier albums, but I think The Rise and Fall is a bit of a neglected gem: slighlty experimental and definately mad.

The Complete EARLY Madness would be a more suitable title, since this album covers their late 70s and early 80s period only. They had lots more hits later that decade and there are more comprehensive hits collections available. But this one captures them when their music was still fresh and innovative - the ska period proper. Always the least serious of all the Two Tone bands, Madness were clearly in it for the fun as their happy, bouncy music demonstrates. The Prince, their tribute to Ska legend Prince Buster, and their theme song Madness, have propulsive rhythms and there's catchy hooks aplenty throughout the album. My favourites include Night Boat To Cairo, One Step Beyond and Return Of The Las Palmas 7. Madness were as essentially English as Ian Dury And The Blockheads ... Read More:
