When I first heard Tribalistsas' cut "Carnavalia" on the radio, I wanted to hear more. So I bought the CD and now listen to it frequently. Another favorite is the catchy "Passe Em Casa," from guest artist Margareth Menezes. This CD does supposedly represent the best of Brazilian pop, and features three of Brazil's hottest stars: Arnaldo Antunes' vocals, Marisa Monte's guitar, and Carlinhos Brown on the piano, bass, and vocals. The trio does create an unbelievable rich, gentle, and subtle melange of vocals and instrumentation; the percussion is wonderful.
Tribalistas combined efforts bring the terrific contemporary music of Brazil to life. This is mellow sound that encourages you to chill-out, and dream. I recommend it. ENJOY!! Aprecíe! Read More:

I studied business and mechanical engineering in Germany and in Brazil in the 1980ies, lived in Rio de Janeiro, travelled all over Brazil, visited Salvador de Bahia, Recife, ..., met a lot of very friendly people, fell in love into Brazilian girls/women, loved the Brazilian music and life style, ... Marisa Monte's music reminds me to a wonderful time in my life and to extremely wonderful people!
....a portrait of MARISA MONTE:
If there is an inherent weakness in the so called new generation of MPB, then it would be its tendency towards the ostentatious - the will to turn every single initiative into a manifest, an event or a cultural landmark. These pretensions could really affect the listening experience of Tribalistas, a project ... Read More:

Marisa Monte has a special gift which is very rare in the world. She is a truly exceptional musical talent. The depth of feeling and emotion she brings to her music touches your soul and leaves a permanent impression on your heart. She sings in so many different styles that you sometimes don't recognize that it is the same singer. From soft melodic and harmonious to loud, powerful and aggressive Marisa moves effortlessly from one genre to another and blows you away every time. Few artists in the world can touch her as a live performer. Her audiences absolutely adore her.
Marisa plays a whole range of different instruments and writes many of her own pieces. Each song is carefully crafted and deeply thought through. She's in a totally different league to virtually ... Read More:

A leading figure in Brazilian pop for 15 years, Marisa Monte had her biggest hit with the collaborative project "Tribalistas" (2002), and these simultaneously released albums are her first solo works since 2000.
"Universo ao Meu Redor" is the more accessible, a slightly overproduced chamber pop project casting a fond ear over more than 50 years of samba history."Universo Au Meu Redor" (The Universe Around Me) came from Monte's loving investigation of classic samba from the 1940s and '50s, which is more lyrical than the revved-up carnival version familiar to most North Americans.
For "Universo" she interviewed older samba artists and their families and collaborators, producing songs that had never been recorded and writing new ones inspired by a different musical era ... Read More:

I was given this CD as a Christmas present - I asked for it on a whim - I heard some of the snippets on Amazon and just fell in love with it. The voice of this woman is pure silk - absolutely beautiful... and to top it all there is real feeling in the words that she sings just listen to Beija-Eu.(kiss me)
If you like this check out Adriana Calcohetto (probably spelt disasterously wrong) and if you are struggling with the Portuguese and want a rich, smooth sound in English try Kathryn Williams or Heather Nova....

One shouldn't have a prudish reaction to the artwork, if you give it time you'll realise that it's focused on love as a source of warmth and happiness. Having got over the slightly saucy hurdle(that is the cover art), you'll discover that you've got your hands on one of the most musically generous pieces ever to come out of Brazil. Marisa Monte has a wonderful ability to combine the traditional forms of Samba, Bossa etc. with more modernistic western production techniques and sound textures. It's a wonderfully layered record, danceable rhythms-hummable tunes, all working alongside some yearning existential lyrics. I can't understand why Marisa ain't more popular. She is a true artist in every sense of the word. She has built upon the foundations of Tropicalia, and created a music that ... Read More:
