Terra

It's taken me a while to fully appreciate this album. At first I found it slightly dull melodically, and lacking a ballad with the same emotive power of her much-loved 'O gente da minha terra'. But it's grown on me, and those songs that have the sad beauty typical of fado music have thoroughly eclipsed the few that don't do it for me. Ten successful tracks out of 14 is pretty good value for money, I reckon.

Technically, it's perfect: Mariza's voice is as pitch-perfect, controlled and expressive as ever, the musicianship and production are superb, and it's more diverse than her previous albums, with some jazzy, laidback trumpet and piano, occasional flamenco influence, and a Cape Verde-style song (featuring Tito Paris, who ... Fado Curvo

This singer packs an amazing emotional impact, and her fabulous, earthy voice is beautifully set off by settings that vary from traditional to innovative. The haunting "Menino do Bairro Negro" is particularly memorable. Perhaps Amazon should consider adding a sixth star to its ratings.

Fado Em Mim

There is a "Limited Edition" version of this (at the time of writing available from Amazon) with an extra CD of Live Tracks from an appearance at the WOMAD festival in the UK. These are less "polished" than the (excellent) live Concerto en Lisboa but well worth the nominal extra price.

Sorry but this isn't "Fado". It is Pop music nad not the best one, for the effect!!
If you want to hear REAL "Fado" and a fantastic singer listen to Ana Moura or Mafalda Arnauth or Cristina Branco. These are true "fado" singers, full of Pathos and emotion!!

Mariza - Concerto Em Lisboa

I was hugely disappointed when I received this DVD. I have several CDs by MAriza, her voice is truly amazing. Unfortunately in this concert she is accompanied not only by her regular guitarists but also the Lisbon Sinfonietta and consequently the unique, intimate sound of fado is watered down by the orchestral backing. The whole concert is lacking in intimacy and spontaneity, with no real communication between musicians and audience.

A great CD from an accomplished Fadista - but the DVD will add a great deal to the pleasure. If you cannot watch the DVD [reviews of the DVD have been posted on Amazon] - this is still a must-have CD

Fado Em Mim: Limited Edition

I admit fado is not for everyone taste, as opera is not as well or hard core heavy metal. Point is, this CD is a master piece on it's kind. If you are a fado fan, this CD is a must have. If you are sort of neutral to fado and would like to have at least a couple of CDs of fado, this CD is a must have. If you never heard about fado and you would like to listen at least one CD, this CD is a must have.

Fado is not for old people. It's an acquired taste that you get with maturity.
