This is a brave score. It's contemplative, haunting and has tracks of unusually long duration. But Mark Isham has succeeded in producing the perfect accompaniment to one of the most intricately woven and intensely moving movies of recent years, `Crash' and for me that means every single track, including the final song `Maybe Tomorrow' by The Stereophonics.
The are a few stand-out tracks for me, none of which need explaining, or rating, because all you need do to evoke them is to think back on those scenes in the movie from which they were taken and all that feeling comes flooding back...
(8) `Flames'
(10) `A Really Good Cloak'
(12) `St Christopher'
(13) `Sense of Touch'
(14) `In the Deep'

I first heard this disc being played about ten years ago in a second-hand store in Eastcote, and was captivated by its air of smoky mystery. I wasn't able to buy it then (the chap for whom it was being played, not surprisingly, snapped it up), but found a copy the following year in another second-hand store - this time, in Pasadena. I originally came across Mark Isham on his great Windham Hill release "Vapor Drawings", which combined his atmospheric trumpet playing with some nice electronic treatments to create an expansive wide-screen sound (Isham was to go on to become a very successful film composer).
That release also showcased his great gift for melody (particularly on "In The Blue Distance" and "On The Threshold Of Liberty"), ... Read More:

When I first saw this disc, and knowing what Mark Isham is capable of I expected an accomplished Miles tribute . This is far more than that. The band put their own perspective onto the music. It is just like the reinterpretation that Miles had live on familar studio tracks with his last touring band. It is also meaningful to draw a parallel with the Miles tribute "He Loved Him Madly" this also pays tribute and points forward. The albumn shows how modern and relevant the often maligned electric period of Miles is.It seems that we are just catching up now to what Miles heard in 1970! And it points to the capability of Mark Isham, as a composer interpretor band-leader and musician. This is a must buy disc, easily the best thing Mark Isham ... Read More:
