Neck and Neck

A jolly collaboration this, with MK evidently enjoying a chance to explore his Notting Hillbillies side. With the exception of the very last track written by MK, these are all covers of Don Gibson era type tunes and the whole set hangs together most satisfyingly. The recording's a peach too.

Private Investigations - The Best Of

Another compilation of Straits songs and yet again they get it wrong.Instead of a two-disc anthology concentrating on the bands career (the Eagles 2-disc set is a prime example of what could and should have been) we are given a compilation which mixes Straits material with solo stuff and collaborations with female singers.This is really a mess - lets hope the powers that be listen and get it right in future.

Local Hero

I love the film. I love the music and love most of this album. Some tracks seem a bit strange such as the second one which is why I was a bit choosy as to which ones went onto my MP3 player. The main theme is haunting and deffinitely the best, the ceilidh music less memorable. All in all though this is a good soundtrack album. If only I could get hold of the film on DVD I would be very happy.

I read a couple of reviews about this disc, and decided to give it a go. It duly arrived. I played it. Twice. The first time, I nodded off halfway through it. The second time, I switched it off about three quarters of the way through. It really never gets going. I wanted desperately to like it, but I can't. Wander through any large car boot sale and you'll come across a stand with a radio blasting out Irish folk music. And this is what this disc sounds like. Daniel O'Donnell with a better guitar backing. A great pity, it should have been so good.

Private Investigations [The Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler]

Yesterday I purchased a copy of the cd set - Private Investigations , and low and behold when I played it, the songs didnt match the linear notes...
Telegraph Rd and So Far Away didnt EXIST...There were repeats of Boom Like That and Calling Elvis... Maybe the NZ pressing was different to the origional, if so its not fair.
But I got it at a good price, The retailer know nothing was wrong, I wont return the discs as the deal was extra good...
Hey still love Mark Knoflers style, use of the Fender...

Golden Heart

'Golden Heart' is one of those albums that is rarely far from my stereo despite having it in my music collection for many years. It blends perfectly Knopflers voice, songwriting abilities and awesome guitar playing into one heavenly package. From the beautiful opener 'Darling Pretty' to 'Golden Heart' via the upbeat and fun 'Cannibals' and taking in the mournful melancholy of 'Rudiger' this album delivers so much emotion on one CD it almost demands repeated listening. The closing solo on 'Are We in Trouble Now' still gives me goosebumps even now and shows just how much power this album has. Knopflers later solo albums were hit and miss, but this one set the standard so high it was always going to be difficult to live up to it and this is the Knopfler album I keep coming ... Read More:

The Ragpicker's Dream

Apart from the opening track, `Why aye, man', which has all the elements a good song should have (at very least, enough lyrical deftness and musical hooks to make you want to listen to it more than once, or find yourself singing the riff in the car three days later), almost everything on this album is pretty forgettable.

While I defer to no one in my admiration for Knopfler's guitar playing and large parts of his body of work as a recording artist, the direction he's increasingly following in his solo work, though allegedly fulfilling for him and more representative of `what's in his heart', makes for pretty tedious listening.

Screenplaying

You dont need to be a guitar enthusiast or a fan to experience the sheer genius of Mark Knopfler that this collection tellingly brings home. This album is a gem that's been hidden away for too long. If you enjoy instumental music then this one absolutely *must* be one in your collection. There's a touch of folk to many of the tracks and Mark Knopfler has partnered with greats like Paul Brady to produce some of the best in there. Oh and remember, the first few times you listen to this, make sure you're in a place and time you'd want to remember much much later . . . this album does that to you - brings back the sights, the smells and the sounds of the place where you first listened to it!!
