It's funny the regular bloke in the once much admired Record Collector
shop in Sheffield didn't know he had in stock this blockbusting new album (his first in ten years), especially when you consider MS dominates the front of the new Wire (for obvious reasons) which was proudly displayed upright on the top of the counter.

'Have you heard it yet?' I inquires as he takes me 12 squid...
'No.' as his eyes tries to avert my probe...
'Look, he's all over the Wire and it's a really great article'.
'I don't read Wire' he says.

I bought many of the Nonesuch recordings in this splendid set at a premium price as they were originally released, but having them together in a boxed set at this very attractive price was inevitable. New recordings of four works make the boxed set almost essential for a Reich enthusiast, and the rest of the set should make it equally tempting for a more casual listener.

At first, ten discs of Reich may look like nine too many, especially if your exposure to minimalism has been via the diminishing pleasures on offer from Philip Glass. In reality, however, there is a good deal of progress & variety across Reich's career, meaning that these discs span a number of rewarding works.

A amazing debut from mark and the maffia. Carrying on the "groove" from the pop group, mark and maffia dabble in dub, hip hop, avant-garde and what sounds like electronica. imagine the pop group trying to play new order in their own twisted style while lee "scratch" perry is chillin in the corner. Amazing sounds, probably nothing like it since or after.

Stewart had been a member of The Pop Group whose smashed up jazz funk ignited both passion and ridicule from the music press during the late 70s. this was the first mark stewart album i ever heard and it's also the one i come back to the most. for fans of reverb and noisy dance/dub music, well look no further. heh, the reverbs are so good i even named one of my own reverb settings after the third track. but it's also a good document of the time it was made; it bristles with the angst and anger of too much conservative rule. in its own way it rocks hard. good stuff
