Labour of Love casts attention on a facet of Nick Lowe's talent that's surprisingly uncelebrated--his songwriting prowess. Having made his mark as a producer, performer, and sideman, Lowe's skills as a singer-songwriter have been taken for granted, but, as this tribute confirms, Nick has long possessed a knack for mating blissful hooks with pithy couplets. Here an assortment of players and singers from a range of genres tackle Lowe gems dating from his new wave heyday up through his brilliant late-'90s comeback. Proving the adaptability of Lowe's material is half the fun here, as Joe Louis Walker turns the '70s anthem ("What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" into a midtempo soul lament, "Half a Boy and Half a Man" ... Please disregard the description under "What the critics have to say"...it's a mistake. This is most definitely NOT a metal album. Marshall Crenshaw is one of the finest but popularly (not critically, mind you) underrated pop stars of the past two decades. This album was his second major release, and it is a little more suave and polished than the energetic and award-winning first eponymous album. Marshall Crenshaw is the US' answer to Elvis Costello, and like Elvis' music, a Crenshaw tune lasts a lifetime. So, go on and invest!

My flatmate came home at 3am, put our stereo on top volume playing 'Who Stole that Train' and then woke me up by shaking me violently and repeating at the top of his voice "Who stole the train off the tracks, Bennet? Marshall Crenshaw wants to know." However, despite this, I love the album. Each tune is a cracker, but what I most loved about it is the variety within the songs, from the jump-up-and-downs to the smoother ballads and a lot of songs to which I said 'Oh, is this Marshall Crenshaw as well?' - He is such an influential artist that somehow listening to him makes you feel at the heart of music.
