Arnell - Piano Concerto Op 44; Symphony No 2

Why don't we hear more of Arnell's music. I have only recently come across this as it was listed by Amazon on my recommendations. I bought this disc as a 'sampler' a few days ago and have already listened to it many times.It is challenging but at the same time is very accessible. I can't wait to buy everything else of Arnell's that I can lay my hands on.

The Phantom of the Opera (Highlights)

Claire Moore and John Barrowman are great as Christine and Raoul, but Graham Bickley's voice is flat, emotionless, etc. If you want the best hilights CD, get the original London cast hilights. Michael, Sarah and Steve are all amazing.

Arnell - Symphony No 3; New Age Overture

It took me a few hearings before I came to realise how good this symphony is, but now I think it is one of the most exciting works I have heard in years. Its unusual construction with six movements, three short and three long is very effective. Unlike the other reviewer, I wouldn't compare it that closely to Rubbra, if only because I found its melodies are so much more memorable than Rubbra's (sorry - my fault I'm sure).
It is interesting that there is obviously a market for CDs like this of British music , but where are the performances outside the mainstream? Discuss with reference to Malcolm Arnold, Lennox Berkeley, Alan Bush, Grace Williams, Humphrey Searle etc etc.

Eternal Caballe

One of the more rounded collection of Caballe's works, this double CD set includes the touching and poignant Paraules d'amour, and the touchstone of all operatic arias, Casta Diva. Her signing is faultless, the recording good. Even the Andrew Void-Webber "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" sounds substantial when covered by Montse. But the CD booklet is deficient. No details at all.

Sweet Charity - First Complete Recording

I have never been able to work out why this CD is freely available but the OST Shirley Maclaine/Sammy Davis Jr version isn't. Surely that would be more popular? Surely someone else wants to hear it? But apparently not - it was released on vinyl, but not CD. In the meantime, there are a few other versions of Sweet Charity on CD, and this is the best. Bob Fosse's wife Gwen Verdon is a sweet singer, and conveys Charity's tarty/good-girl thing well. It's a great album, the songs are cool, funny, the version of Big Spender is pretty flawless. Rhythm of Life is one of the best songs ever, and this version misses the scat diversions of Sammy Davis Jr's version in the movie, but is still a great track.
