The Blue God

Martina Topley Bird does not fit into one category of music.
Broadly speaking she is "Eclectic Electronica", but fans of Jazz, Soul, Alternative and Hip Hop would all be advised to check this very strong album, and her first "Quixotic" too.
She has a clear yet soulful subtle voice, with good phrasing and a dreamy tinge to it.
The beats are catchy, varied and original.
I heavily recommend that, if you are at all interested in top class and vibrant music, you buy this album.

I bought this album for a couple of reasons - firstly, the incredibly etherial-sound that is 'Sandpaper Kisses', which I discovered though the equally esoteric xbox game 'Fahrenheit'. Secondly, the Mercury music award nomination and other glowing reviews.

However, for me this album is all shades of grey - apart from the track that I bought it for and one other, which is a real let-down. I was expecting more of the same - that hypnotic voice mixed with a variation of new sounds, but what is commonly revered as 'That Voice' becomes a mediocre and broadly monotonous sound in a selection of tracks that seem to meandre through repetitive and down-beat tunes and rhythms; not the rich and varied combination that ... This song, from Martina's debut album, is simple, stylish and beautifully crafted. Her distinctive, honey-coated razor-edged vocals shape the moody lyrics perfectly.

The video's pretty cool too; I especially like the gold glitter.
