Whether this collection really is the best of Marty's music is doubtful but it does showcase the diversity of his music and everything here is of a high quality. Marty recorded several different types of music including rock'n'roll, cowboy music, classic pop ballads, mainstream country and Hawaiian music. All of them are represented here so you can easily make up your own mind what you like best.
In the fifties, he achieved some success in rock'n'roll, particularly with Singing the blues, which gave him an American top twenty hit. Guy Mitchell, a friend of Marty's, originally refused to record the song but did so once Marty's version had dropped out of the charts. Guy took the song to the very top of the American pop charts. In the UK, Guy's version ... Read More:

Marty Robbins was a major country singer over three decades, beginning his recording career and establishing himself quickly. He maintained a high level of consistent success throughout the fifties and sixties and also had some notable successes in the seventies. This set covers his entire recording career. Originally released in America in a long box format with two separate CD jewel boxes and a large booklet inside, it was released in Europe in a two-door jewel case and later in a slimline double-CD case. I imported the original boxed set many years ago. I don't know which packaging is current in America, but the music remains the same.
Marty's early recordings often became successful in both the country and pop charts in America. He only had limited ... Read More:

Recorded in a day in 1959 this album combines traditional songs (Billy the Kid, The Strawberry Man, Utah Carol) with a number of Robbins penned classics. Look at the cover - put it to music the result is what you insert and play on your CD. Fantastic.
Highlights are definitely 'Big Iron' which was penned by Robbins based on the recollections of his grandfather a Texas Ranger. It tells the story of a Ranger''s gunfight with an outlaw named Texas Red (based on Billy the Kid). The town predicts the death of the ranger, but he kills his bounty with the quickness of the "big iron" on his hip. Instead of the showdown happening at high noon, the gunfight begins at 11:20.
"El Paso" which like Big Iron stretches for four minutes a problem at the ... Read More:

I'm a great lover of the Rockin' Rollin' side too Marty Robbins and after hearing a track by a Neo Rockabilly band called The Blue Cats namely "Rivers Bend" I went in search of the original by Marty and couldn't find it on any of his Gunfighter Ballad albums etc. Well I found the track on this box set and decided to splash out. Extravagent I know but this has turned out to be one of the best investments I ever made in a set of CD's. This set has educated me to the excellence of Marty Robbins. The gunfighter ballads and songs of the old west contained on these 4 CD's have opened up a whole new world of music to me. I play these CD's all the time, the quality of the recordings and musicianship is second to none. As for Marty's voice....haunting. I thought this set had been ... Read More:
