Professional folk musicians keep saying that the album is so interesting because of the mixture of styles the album is presenting with as well as the new territory Martyn has entered. That is all true, and the album also is also very danceable, that is if you like a little bit of variation and improvisation in your movements.

But for me music, as with any art, is in the first place about what it tells me: As far as I am concerned this album is BURSTING with passion and the subtitle of GRIT could easily be: "Martyn's last second alive". I only occasionally dear to listen to this album, but when I do it is always inspiring!

For the few(?) of us who happily enjoy both traditional Irish/Scottish/Asturian dance music and modern drum'n'bass, this album is something of a watershed. "Synthesised" diddley-eye is not a new phenomenon but I cannot recall anyone who has pushed both sides of the coin so far on the same recording. Purists may not appreciate the slight variations on old Irish and Scottish tunes but this album is "progressive" in the best possible sense of the word.

'Glen Lyon' is Martyn Bennett's first release since the industrial-folk of 'Hardland', and you couldn't ask for two more different albums. Bennett has gone right back to his roots for a 15 track exploration not only of his own family's musical heritage, but also of Gaelic Scottish culture.
Bennett's family figures heavily - almost all the tracks are sung by his mother, Margaret, with help on one track from her mother Peigi Stewart. Also included on a couple of tracks are recordings of Bennett's own great-great-grandfather, Peter Stewart, recorded on wax cylinder in 1910. The tracks are all in gaelic, but for the non-gaelic speaking listener the detailed sleeve notes make the songs accessible.

This is the kick in the pants Celtic music has needed for the new millenium.More rhythmic than the previous two fabulous 5 star albums of MB's,but not as melodic,but riveting listening nonetheless.To me,there are influences of Holger Czukays "Movies" interspersed with Jon Hassells' "City-Works of Fiction" albums,literally kebabbed in a Celtic wrapper driven by an hypnotic pulsing beat.Now I can't wait to see these perform "Live".Buy,Buy,Buy......
