Merry Motown - Merry Christmas From Motown

by: Marvin Gaye Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Diana Ross Michael Jackson Kim Weston Stevie Wonder The Supremes The Funk Brothers Various Artists

Release Date November 05, 2001
Motown artists produced a lot of Christmas albums over the years and this one culls the best of the tracks from a number of them. The arrangements are for the most part simpler and more classic than the pop hits that arrived factory like form the industy.
This collection features some outstanding, and probably rare gems notably Smokey Robinson's beautiful Christmas Lullaby, a live track from Marvin Gaye ~ The Christmas Song, a great soul track from the incredibly underrated Kim Weston ( a voice second only to the great Florence Ballard),Stevie Wonder's cabaret Everyone's a Kid at Christmastime, and for me the greatest surprise closes the album is Marvin Gaye's rewriting of Little Darlin as Purple Snowflakes.

Take Two+

by: Marvin Gaye Kim Weston

Release Date January 22, 2007
Marvin Gaye enjoyed his parallel career as a duettist with Motown's favoured ladies, and enjoyed commercial success with each, but was always ultimately unlucky with his vocal partners. First, Mary Wells left the label for Twentieth Century Fox, then Kim Weston left with husband-producer Mickey Stevenson to sign to MGM, and finally Tammi Terrell collapsed in his arms onstage with a fatal brain tumour, at which point he pledged never to pair up again.

Mary Wells' sudden departure caused seismic waves at Motown. It is well known that some new songs she had recorded were reassigned to other singers, notably a reluctant Brenda Holloway, but it now appears that in May 1964 work had also begun on another record with Marvin Gaye. The evidence ... Read More:

Together (With Mary Wells) & Take Two (With Kim Weston)

by: Marvin Gaye Mary Wells Kim Weston

Release Date February 26, 2001
Marvin recorded plenty of duets in his time with a variety of female singers including Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell. This twofer is made up of duets with Mary Wells and Kim Weston.

The first album, Together, was recorded with Mary Wells and released in 1964. The only single from the album, Once upon a time, made the top twenty in America but missed the charts in Britain. Among the other songs here are interesting duet versions of the classic songs Deed I do and I love you for sentimental reasons.

The second album, Take two, was recorded with Kim Weston and released in 1967. It includes both sides of their 1964 USA-only single (What good am I without you b/w I want you round) and ten new tracks. One single, It takes two, was released ... Read More:
