This woman has lived! The songs here deal with such a wide range of deep, at times dark, material. The atmosphere of the album is with you in the first few notes, and its the type of CD that really won't let go. Listen to this late at night when you're prepared to think about the lyrics. Some of these great songs got in my head straight away.
Release Date September 12, 2007
This is a great album. Mary Gauthier (I've been told it's pronounced 'Go-Shay') has a hard edge to her vocals - she reminds me in some way of Lucinda Williams, with a little bit of John Prine thrown in for good measure on her earlier albums! For me, the best tracks on this CD are 'Snakebit', 'Can't Find the Way' (about the New Orleans floods?) and 'Please'. But there isn't a bad track on this album - and the sound and production are perfect. Mary's voice is the main instrument, but accompanied by some great guitar playing. And I'm convinced that the drummer on 'Last of the Hobo Kings' is drumming with his hands on bare skin rather than drums! This is a fantastic album, and at the price it's a bargain. Don't hesitate, just buy it!

Not what you'd call a cheery collection of songs.... Mary has been well promoted up here in the North on Radio Scotland (under the Alternative Country / Americana labeling). The material is good and having lived in the deep south of the states I can equate to a lot of the songs.
Its very down beat country, great voice AND the kids hate her. She can drive teenagers out of a room in 30 seconds flat (very useful).
Quote from no.2 son - she's Sh&t.
Release Date September 07, 1999
Definitely one of the best music purchases I've made in the last couple of years. Mary Gauthier has a unique skill in the descriptiveness of her lyrics, that just take you to where she is in a song - from leaving home, to the atmosphere of a relationship breakdown, to the despair and subsequent acceptance of a prisoner on death-row. A somewhat dark, but incredibly uplifting album of hope, summed up in the lyric... "sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do, and pray that the people you love will catch up with you."
