Mary Hopkin was one of those 1960s UK pop singers influenced by folk music, like the early Marianne Faithfull. She made breezy melodic pop music with flair and had huge hits with Those Were The Days, Temma Harbour and Knock Knock Who's There. There is a special wistful quality in her voice that makes these songs still resonate in my mind after all these years. The album also includes pop standards like Que Sera Sera and the folk classic Streets Of London which she interprets gracefully, plus a song in Italian. If you like melodic pop from the 60s and early 70s, you'll love this album. I also recommend it to fans of Marianne Faithfull's early work and of Francoise Hardy.

A very bizarre opening track to any album in 'Lord Of The Reedy River', followed by a much better song in 'Happiness Runs'.
As one would expect here, this is a very 'folky' album, but also full of other 'weird' songs and covers one may not have expected from Mary Hopkin - particularly songs that were not written for women, and so do not come out well... Among these are: 'Love Is The Sweetest Thing' and 'Young Love' - also a terribly sluggish rendition of 'Show Business' that was most certainly a mistake to record...
Upon first hearing this; a very strange album indeed that one really needs to listen to several times in order to get used to it. For many people who had been swept away by her number one smash ... Read More:

I stumbled on this CD by accident and struck gold! The purity of Mary Hopkins' voice is extraordinary and the beauty of the songs is enhanced by the translation into Welsh. "Plaisir d'amour" and "Turn, Turn, Turn" are a particular delight. I was especially pleased with a track that wasn't even on the list! - the copy I received had the Billy Edd Wheeler classic "The Coming of the Roads", made famous by July Collins, instead of the listed "Can't Help Falling in Love", which Mary has done beautifully. I can't recommend this CD too highly! Listen to it, buy it and then buy it for your friends.

I purchased this CD because it has 2 songs written by the great Bruce Cockburn, and I wished to hear how Mary would interpret these gems. To my pleasant surprise, not only did she perform Cockburn's songs beautifully, she also has put together an entire album of truly outstanding performances. Even though I own many (too many!) CD's, Valentine has not left my CD changer since I purchased it more than a month ago. It is that good.

I always liked Mary Hopkin's rich, melodic voice and recently bought this album. It's so much better than the mediocre jingly songs that she became known for and displays the range of her voice much more effectively. Nothing quite compares with her stunning rendition of Beyond the Fields We Know (on the 'King of Elfland's Daughter' album), where the power, emotion and depth of her singing are amazing. But this superb collection will certainly get lots of time on my CD player.

This debut CD of Thomas Ades is wonderful introduction to this composer.
I'm not sure if I'm looking to deeply but I sence in all the pieces on this disk a dark edge beneth all the multicoloured orcestration. 'Catch' I feel is rather frightening in the way the ensemble on stage lures the clarinet to take a seet with them. As you will hear, the final bars of the piece are not dipicting a very happy clarinetist as the entrapping ensemble make one final swipe at them! 'Darkness Visible' might be my favourit piece. It really has the sence of hearing the song through a pool of water or through ages past.
All the pieces have real depth and it is quite amazing

Mike Hurst was one of three members of the early sixties British folk trio, the Springfields. The other two members were Tom and Dusty Springfield. In the early eighties, Mike decided that he wanted to create a new version of that group. For the new trio, he teamed up with Michael de Alberquerque, ex-ELO bass player, and Mary Hopkin. Although Mary was not actually planning a comeback when Mike was looking for a female singer to join Sundance, she lived in the same area as Mike and readily agreed to the idea.
The public did not buy their music (although What's love became an unexpected hit in South Africa), despite Sundance being the opening act for one of Dr Hook's UK tours. Mary also developed unexpected health problems and was forced to quit. After Mary left, ... Read More:
