The Very Best Of Matt Monro

I can't review this particular disc as I don't have it, but it has all his best tracks. Anyone who doubts Matt's ability should listen to the way he can hold a perfect note - sometimes, at the end of a song, for up to 10 seconds. If this doesn't sound like much, try it yourself! Apparently, when he was in the forces, Matt used to enter talent contests, and was eventually told to stop entering because he kept winning! Scandalously, his title song to 'From Russia with Love' was removed from later issues of that film. Why??

It is clear from reading other reviews on Amazon and elsewhere that people have mixed feelings about this collection. Some would have an album of entirely new recordings (and maybe more original songs and fewer covers) while others would have preferred an album comprising entirely re-issues. Perhaps it was decided that this compromise would suit everybody. Certainly, I'd been expecting a compilation of Cliff's duet hits ever since the release of his 6-CD boxed set (Singles collection), which contained every British solo single that Cliff had recorded up to that point, but noticeably avoided all the duets. The Collection

Based on the previous review, I bought this cd primarily to hear Matt's version of Yesterday When I was Young. However another song has eclipsed it in my opinion. "Diana" is incredibly beautiful and this song alone is worth the price of this double-cd collection. I also enjoyed the rare songs "Mama Packed A Picnic Tea", "How Do You Do" and "First Of May". I am deducting one star for the redundant songs on this compilation that make it difficult to hear the rare ones. I wish EMI will place all the rare songs together so that we don't have to use the remote so often to skip the familiar ones which are on countless compilations. Why can't EMI UK give us WEDNESDAY's CHILD in STEREO when my Collectables cd from USA can? I also wish the version of "You And Me ... Read More:

The Ultimate Matt Monro

This is another amazing collection of the velevety tones of the master. But the best surprize is the release of five new tracks never released to CD before. It's been a long time coming and is aptly fitting for the 20th Anniversary. It's a great easy listening collection of his well known hits and will bring back some wonderful memories to the listener. It's also a treat that some of the oldies have been remastered. Well done EMI. Fantastic

Matt at the Movies

I welcome any Matt Monro issue that adds new items to my discography; in this three cd set there are very many overlaps however. What bugged me more is that recording dates and the accompanying orchestras are not mentioned at all; instead we get liner notes that list the movies from which the songs were taken; sometimes with too much artifice: Stranger In Paradise had been around since 1940 (with different words) before it was used in film; the same goes for Stardust, Chattanooga Choo Choo and some others; but the quality of the singing is beyond reproach, and in that it would be a good buy for newcomers to the Monro world, certainly at this price.

Matt Sings And Nelson Swings

This is a very special performance from two giants at the top of their game!From the first bell notes on the first track "Brother John" it becomes obvious that the top London studio players of the time (1967)are present.It's certainly not just a case of Nelson providing backgrounds for Matt as there are no less than 5 stunning instrumental pieces where,as Nelson himself says,he "appreciates the fine musicianship".Matt's voice is beautiful and the performance of "When You Become A Man" is a real highlight.
I'd be greatful if anybody could provide a personnel list.It's definitelty Don Lusher playing the introductory trombone solo on "The Shadow Of Your Smile",a jaw dropping drummer on "It's Allright With Me".
