While he might not be a household name, Clifford Brown was - I believe - one of the best jazz trumpeters ever to have played, up there with the likes of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan, players people are inclined to make much more noise about, but none of whom, I don't think, ever surpassed Brown's charismatic and joyful sound.
After Brown died in a car crash at the age of only 27, Dizzy Gillespie went as far as to describe the day as a fatal blow for jazz. It's understandable why Gillespie felt this way - Brown was not only a virtuouso player, he had incredible soul and subtlety, as well as stunning speed and style. I actually own the LP of this album printed - I believe - in the 70s, so I can say with some certainty that the original is not quite brilliant when it comes to the recording technology. However, the music is quite brilliant, with Clifford Brown playing beautifully, both in warm ballads and hot up-tempo... Also, this is a nice mix-up of standards and originals.
This music, while performed at virtuoso level also sounds as it might be quite accessible to the jazz beginners...
The rest of the Max Roach All Stars is also really fine (Richie Powell-p, George Morrow - b, Harold Land-ts), with plenty opportunity to strut their stuff... Such a pity for Brown and Richie Powell to die so young (they were victims of the same car ... Read More:
