Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project

by: James Bond Films (Related Recordings)

Release Date October 20, 1997
Having taken over the mantle of composing the James Bond movie soundtracks for the 90s (and very good they are too), David Arnold revisits Bond theme songs in this project, working with a wide range of artists to produce a set of really interesting covers. And the whole CD is worth buying just for the astounding first track - David McAlmont is Miss Shirley Bassey as his falsetto vamps up 'Diamonds are Forever' in homage to the queen of Bond theme songs and gay icon. After that you feel rather let down by Aimee Mann's understated 'Nobody does it better' - although listened to separately, this track will grow on you. Chrissie Hynde rocks out in 'Live and let die', and the Propellerheads do their drum'n'bass thing brilliantly with 'On her Majesty's ... Read More:

The Sound of Mcalmont and Butler

by: McAlmont & Butler

Release Date November 27, 1995
Again, as always, I owned this on tape in the '90s and binned it. Bought it the other day and it's still stunning. I was mortified when they initially fell out, but glad they patched things up, although I never did hear the follow-up record.

Make no mistake, there are a few absolutely astonishing tracks on this CD that are worth it's purchase alone; Yes, You Do, Although, etc.

It's a work of beauty and will be on my ipod and hifi for years to come. I still can't get my head around McAlmont's vocal range and Butler's playing. Plus the '60s slightly Spector-ish production. Oh it's a dream.

Buy it & treasure it, especially at that price.

Bring It Back

by: McAlmont & Butler

Release Date August 12, 2002
This is a much more mature offering than 'The Sound Of', and I prefer it. The songs seem more connected, and have a direction to them. They're catchy and meaningful, which is the mark of good songwriting and musicianship.

David McAlmont's voice and Bernard Butler's guitar playing are completely individual, and when together they're magic. Whether they're funking out on 'The Theme From McAlmont and Butler' or chilling out on 'Blue', every song is unmistakably their own. I don't think you'll find another act that comes close to this one in terms of talent and sound. Recommended to everyone!

Set One - You Go to My Head

by: David McAlmont

Release Date October 24, 2005
This is the sort of thing you would buy a best friend to lift them when times are hard.

Mcalmont is one of Britain’s greatest musical treasures and this album shows clearly that he can take standards previously owned by the likes of Sinatra and Ella and make them his own. If you are looking for warm and lush arrangements and a voice that can only be compared to Marvin Gaye then your quest can end right here.

Falling

by: McAlmont & Butler

Release Date July 29, 2002
'Falling' evokes memories of the ‘Yes’ single from many years ago. It is joined here by two other excellent non-album tracks ‘Your Memory’ and ‘If You Want’ which sound anything but B-sides. Recommended for M&B fans, but casual admirers of ‘Falling’ would be best to pick up the “Bring It Back” album instead.

Mcalmont

by: David McAlmont

Release Date January 23, 1995
Revisiting this album after a spell of not listening to it has made me appreciate this hugely under-rated gem. More personal than his later works this is the perfect start to investigate Mcalmonts career.
Reviewers at the time said the album is like a male sung version of the Cocteau's "Heaven or Las Vegas" and they're not far wrong, the guitars sparkle and shimmer and David's voice often soars into the ether effortlessly matching anything Liz Fraser sung.
Theres huge changes in style too from the melancholy "is it raining" to the PSB-esque "Its always this way". I heartily recommend this album and say if you have had even a passing interest in McAlmont then prepared to be amazed by this album, its arguably the best work he's done to date.
