I had heard of the Babes some time ago. But had not had the opportunity to listen to their music. To be honest, i thought the music would be some sort of New Age rock. And it was not until actually seeing them at a festival and thus hearing their music, that i realised how DIFFERENT and true to their name that they actually were. I immediately started looking for an albulm, and was drawn to Undrentide. And was quite happy that i had made this choice. As the whole albulm is hauntingly melodic, beautifully sung and full of medieval magic. And just pure in content. Also, the fact that the artists sing certain songs in olde English tongue, and in some parts Latin, was most impressive. A very creative, unusual albulm that does manage to transport you to the ... A lot of people dislike the Medieval Baebes for being supposedly pretentious and beloved by pseudo-romantic Goth types - but that's basically just musical snobbery. I mean, come on - with a name like 'The Medieval Baebes', who's stupid enough to actually think they're aiming to appeal to lifelong Medieval Music scholars?
Really, you get far more out of them if you stop thinking of them in relation to other classical music and just love them for what they are - which is accessible, charming and unpretentious Medieval-esque choral loveliness.
The middle-english (or occasionally Latin) lyrics will probably not make sense to your average listener - (best to look at the sleeve notes before you attempt a sing-along!), but if you're ... Read More:

This collection of songs if by no means for the purist looking for a CD of Medieval music. The Babes rework and reinvent the songs giving them a contemporary feel without loosing the otherworldly feeling. The mix of voices are beautiful and I find it's a great relaxing CD

I first heard the M B's music at witchfest uk last year and loved it. This is the first one of their Cd's i have brought and its brilliant. Definately a must buy item!

I first heard the Mediaeval Baebes on a UK double CD (Best carols in the world ever) featuring three of their trackss (Guadete, Coventry carol, Adam lay ibounden), all of which can also be found on teir debut album, but my curiosity only became aroused when that UK double CD was updated and repackaged with a different title (Best Christmas carols ever) and all the Mediaeval Baebes tracks were omitted with other choirs replacing them. My research showed that they have become an established group (albeit with line-up changes) and are now very successful in their chosen style, which some may regard as classical but (since they sing with their natural voices rather than operatic voices) seems more like traditional folk music to me.

This is an album that lives up to all expectations, and any fan of the Baebes cannot help but become further in awe of their prowess. New listeners are in for a real treat, and will no doubt dip into the back catalogue after acquiring this delicacy.
The Rose is not only a fantastic piece of work - it shows that the Baebes have definitely come of age, and that they have found the true direction in which to head. From Salva Nos through to Undrentide, they have experimented and stretched their talents, but before they have come nowhere near to the richness and texture displayed in The Rose, although Undrentide was pretty close.
As with the flower of the same name, you can peel through the many layers of this album to marvel at the skills and talents of this ... Read More:
