Megadeth were never a simple band to follow; guitarists and drummers came and went faster than the proverbial sppedning bullet. It was, however, this fragmentory nature (fuelled by key man Mustaine's explosive nature and destructive behaviour) that was the root source for such benchmark thrash albums as 'Peace Sells' and 'Rust in Peace'. However, 'Countdown' in '92 marked the arrival of Nick Menza (drums) and Marty Freidman (guitar), who would both stick around for the next three albums. This new-found solidarity, combined with Mustaines neo-Christian attitudes after a drink-and-drugs near-death experience mellowed the band: musicianship was up, but fury and sheer weight of noise was down. Megadeth started making it big on Mid-way radio but ... Read More:

Personally, despite what a lot of people have said in their reviews, i think this is superb. There are a few dubious tracks, but overall its got some fantastic music to offer. Technically speaking, the compositions are the best Megadeth have produced since "Rust in Peace," particularly the solo's. Marty's successor, Al Pitrelli, is well tasty, he and Mustaine really complement each other on this record, especially when they "tag team" (i.e. Warhorse, Return to Hangar). If you like Megadeth for their Guitar solo's, this will be right up your alley...
Some of the comments in other reviews really do make me laugh. "1000 times goodbye," & "Burning Bridges" are two of my favourite Megadeth songs at the moment, everyone likes "Dread & ... Read More:

This is not my favourite Megadeth albums but at least it's better than "Risk". They went back and wrote some great rock songs. I really like the songs "Dread And the Fugitive Mind", "Promises", "When" etc. It's not a bad Megadeth album. At least it's better than Metallica's "Load" and "Reload".

to put it as simple as possible...
i have been listening to this CD since it came out and I've bought it in various formats more than 8 times. The times i've listened to this album are way beyond count!!this album IS the quintessence of thrash metal. Atmosphere, ferocity, production, musicianship, lyricism and treble to the MAX!!...it's got them all!!
as a teenager i have been a huge metallica fan...but all comparison FAILS when it comes to this particular gem!! it is by far in a league of its own!
whoever listens to pure metal music MUST own it.
whoever is looking for a place to start this IS it!
Avoid the remastered copies. Dave has done a good job with most of the albums but on this one he could not capture ... Read More:

I read the rave reviews in the music magazines and fell for the hype. This is a highly disappointing album. Musically it is overly complex and whilst Megadeth have always had this facet to their music, I can't help but feel Mustaine is trying a little too hard these days. The songs are also exceptionally verbose with excessive lyrics being crammed in to ludicrously fast songs.
Having tried to get into the album on several occasions, I have accepted failure and consigned my copy to the 'unlikely to be played again' box. I haven't even bothered to put any of it on my ipod, which when you consider that even St Anger is on there, should speak for itself.

There are 2 things that immediately differentiate this album from its predecessors.
Firstly the guitar sound is much improved - heavy, crunchy, and up in the mix.
Secondly, the band seems to have matured, and discovered a social conscience. Mustaine sings here about issues rather than nuclear war and car crashes - not that it ever bothered me before, mind.
The album also sounds mature. Speed has been throttled, and this album stands firmly in mid-tempo territory. The songs are still intricate, but unhurried, and have almost nothing to do with the Speed Metal tag of the early releases. The riffs are given time to breathe and the songs have an unhurried natural, feel about them.
This might not be everyone's idea of improvement, but for me this is ... Read More:
