As a big fan of Megson's last album - the largely original "Smoke of Home" - I approached "Take Yourself a Wife" with some trepidation. Songs gathered from 250 years of the North East's musical tradition didn't exactly make my heart leap in anticipation to be honest. But how wrong could I be? This is excellent stuff - nine tales of distant fathers and departing lovers, of press gangs and pit workers that move easily from the touching "Little Joe" to the entertaining knees-up of the title track.

Smoke of Home

Truly excellent album, catchy rhythmic hooks in "smoke of home" and "fell to the breeze" balanced by the mellow "follow it on". The Nu-folk style is reminiscent of the now-split-up US band Nickel Creek, but the accents are much better in Megson ;). Saw these guys and Cheltenham and was very impressed, and the album was certainly no disappointment, very very good, and pleasing to a pop pallete as well, not just for folk-heads.

What a stunning album!! Fabulous, crystal clear vocals and from Debbie and some really excellent guitar work from Stu. It is easy to listen to, but impossible to get bored of! There isn't a bad track on the album, but the real highlights for me are Grace Darling and the brilliant 'Just Stay'.
Don't hesitate - buy it!

Fabulously talented duet from Middlesborough, I believe that they are now based in London and working hard to get famous. Their talent deserves to be better known. I am sure that it will come in time.

We first heard them in Margate when they were backing Show of Hands.

Stuart is a wizard on the mandolin, and Debs really does sing like an angel - close your eyes and enjoy!

Only four tracks on this EP, but still my family argue over which is best; I like Grace Darling best, they like Smoke of Home.

All good, highly recommended.
