If I was granted one chance to travel back in time, I'd be sitting in the audience at a Tormé/Shearing gig. I think the collection of Mel & George recordings on Concord should have a mention in any history of 20th century music. Two artists, and they really are artists, at the top of their game with boundless enthusiasm for 'The American Songbook'. One of the things I've always loved about these guys is that they seem unable to play one song at a time - one or two more usually sneak in and spotting the lines stolen from other songs is great fun. The Swingle Singers Unwrapped

It creates a very festive calming feel to a room and enables gentle relaxation.
There are some great voices and arrangements and I'm gald to have it in my varied musical collection.

Torme was then sixty-two years old, but his voice had never been better--he never smoked (unusual in this industry), and his voice was mellow and mature, even better at sixty-two than it was at thirty-two. Shearing, at age sixty-eight, having signed with Concord Records in 1979, was enjoying a renaissance as a jazz pianist, making stunning recordings with Carmen McRae, Peggy Lee, and Mel Torme, among others.

This recently discovered 1982 recording of the Carnegie Hall performance of Mel Torme, George Shearing, and Gerry Mulligan is the only known recording of these three giants performing together, and what a performance is! Mulligan's fifteen-piece orchestra connects the artists' solos and fills the recording with atmospheric effects, haunting beats, and dramatic accents. Torme's evolution from crooner of beautiful melodies, as he was in the 1977 "London Sessions," to a full-out jazz performer just five years later, is obvious through his relaxed scatting and his use of his voice as a jazz instrument--on a par with Mulligan's sax and Shearing's piano.
