Wow, some people have given this 5 stars! Well, let me say; I'm quite pleased about that, though I won't be joining them. The crux of the matter is that for me, this record is far too ambient.
You have to applaud the band's ambition - they've left their orchestral epic period behind, and started exploring new territory; this time it's electronic and techno sounds - unfortunately though, I don't find this album stimulating in any way. It sounds very "pieced together", very inorganic, and it lacks the elements of previous records that I liked. I know The Secret Migration" got a panning by and large, but that one actually became my favourite Mercury Rev album - [hear me out...] it was a masterpiece in songwriting; damn near every tune ... It can suit any mood, any time of day, any age group, etc. This really is one of best records of the past 20 years. No doubt about it. There's an almost classic or timeless feel to it. As soon as you hear it you can tell it's quality and in places it's hard to tell when the recording was actually made, which to me is a sign of a great piece of music. Very hard to describe, however, the production on this is stunning.
The reason I'm writing this review? Because I've lost my copy and I'm looking to purchase another one, which must in itself say something.

There's nothing seriously wrong with this album - but there's nothing seriously right with it either. None of the songs are poor but none of them are great. In short, it sounds like a stop-gap album, something for the fans to listen to whilst the band are making their next proper album. It's been a hell of a gap though. Still, maybe that means they're trying really hard which, I suspect, they weren't doing for this album.

what's the point of best of albums - particularly when they are not a single based band - see Frank Black.OK the artists choice is interesting but it is never what you would choose yourself. Fair enough if you can't be bothered to buy all their albums then get this - which at least means you are listening to decent stuff. But who has'nt got Deserter's Songs & if not why not ?? I love this band but please get all their albums !!!!

Some of the music on this album absolutely astounding.
psychedlic masterpieces infused with jazz that are
masterfully orchestrated.

I liked Deserters Songs but found it hard going at times. After hearing The Dark is Rising on radio I decided to take the plunge with All is Dream - and I'm glad I did!
If you like the Mercury Rev sound demonstrated on Holes and Goddess on a Highway, from Deserters Songs, then you will love All is Dream. They have taken that affecting side to their sound and developed it further. All is Dream to me is an astonishing, beautiful thing. I would rate it in my top five albums of all time.
If you don't "get" Mercury Rev (my wife hates them) then avoid it. If you do, you are really going to enjoy this one...a lot.

Mercury Rev albums vary so much musically that it's impossible to say which is the best (though all are worth owning), but Boces certainly demands to be listened to again and again. Experimental but always listenable, I've yet to hear another album like it. My personal favourite tracks are the bizarre but wonderful Trickle Down, the intense joy of Bronx Cheer and the flute-led beauty of Down Are Feminine Balloons. But there's always something new to be gained from this album. Essential for fans of the band anyone who enjoys innovative, forward-thinkng music. N.B. The tracklisting above is completely wrong (sort it out, Amazon!) and the song Frittering mentioned in a previous customer review is in fact on their debut album Yerself Is Steam.
