After the return to form of `Rock Art and the X-Ray Style' great things were expected of the second Mescaleros album and they didn't disappoint.
Only Joe Strummer could take all American iconic folk tale `Johnny Appleseed' and turn it into a world music classic. Unlike its predecessor `Global a Go-Go' is pretty consistent in arrangement with rockabilly guitars with African/bangra percussion, percussive piano arrangements and reggae organ fills with a few techno styling's thrown in for good measure across the first ten tracks. `Johnny Appleseed' gives way to `Cool'N'Out' (a Mescaleros in joke), through the title track and onwards with no drops in quality just great, if bizarrely named, songs. There are some brilliant tracks here, ... Read More:

All great artists generally leave enough material for a posthumous album of some sorts, generally a pork scratching type affair which rarely adds anything to the existing cannon. I think the opposite is true here and that this is greatest of the three albums that The Mescaleros recorded and possibly better than anything Joe recorded with The Clash. I think that taking Joe out of mixing/mastering stages has left his band to complete the album without Joe vetoing anything that he might think commercial and as a consequence I think this is the most immediate album in Joe's cannon.
Festival anthem `Coma Girl' is the strongest opening song any album could hope for and the pace doesn't settle down through the pseudo religious `Get Down Moses', ... Read More:

`The Future us Unwritten' is Julian Temple's documentary film about the late great Joe strummer and is of `The Filth and the Fury' rather than `The Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle' template. The Soundtrack album also serves to tell the story of Joe mixing his own songs with the songs that inspired him and linking it all together with sound bites of Joe from various interviews and the links he made as a DJ for the BBC World Service with his occasional show `London Calling'.
Joe's own cannon is well represented here with The 101ers (Joe's first recording band) `Keys to your Heart' and early Clash with previously un-released demo versions of `White Riot' and `I'm So Bored with the USA'. The Clash's reggae influence is showcased with the single `Armagideon ... Read More:

Ten years had passed since Joe Strummer had last recorded an LP, 1989's `Earthquake Weather' which had been a critical and commercial failure and had lost him his solo contract with CBS/Epic the home of The Clash. Since then he had deputised for Shane MacGowan on a Pogues tour, appeared with Black Grape, The Levellers and Fat Les as well as contributing to the soundtracks and making cameo appearances in various independent films. Nobody was expecting much of The Mescaleros as The Latino Rockabilly War was still very much in everyone's mind if not on their turntables.
The album opens with `Tony Adams' which if it is a tribute to the England and Arsenal Captain and defender it is very obscure but a great song regardless. `Sandpaper Blues' and `X-Ray ... Read More:

This single is absolutely fantastic. Top quality. It is a must have for any music (let alone Joe Strummer or Clash) fan. It is just a shame that this is the first of the last batch of stuff we'll hear from the great man. I simply cannot say enough good things sbout it.It is most defintely the most accessable stuff released with the Mescys. BUY IT and enjoy it.This is how music should be.

This song is a huge return to form for Joe Strummer, only the hardest thing to bear is, hes not here to accept the praise - and instead you get people saying that this is recieving plaudits because he'd dead - which is bunkum - not 'diet' clash - just inspired Joe Strummer genius, it makes me as Clash, and a Joe fan, cry to think what a talent was lost - listen to this and the rest of the Streetcore album and apprieciate this wonderful man.
