Micah P Hinson's fourth album - the first I've heard since his powerful debut `Michah P Hinson and the Gospel of Progress' - is an accomplished work and the sound of a prolific artist heading for an artistic peak. Produced by alt-rock mixing guru John Congleton, renowned for the dark gloss put on albums by the likes of Anthony & the Johnsons, Modest Mouse and Explosions in the Sky, `Micah P. Hinson and the Red Empire Orchestra' is somehow both expansive and concise, brooding but melodic. Much is made of Hinson's troubled past, and I imagine his record label see the value in backing up his cracked baratone with claims of former drug and alcahol addiction, time in prison and, um, chain-smoking, as if to add gravitas to his skinny geek looks. ... Get it clear in your head first. This is a really great album. It might take a few listens for some, but it's definately worth the effort. There is a "but" though. I have it on good authority that there are people in the world who do not like Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart, Bright Eyes, Belle and Sebastian, Ry Cooder and the like. So if you are one of those people you should probably give it a miss. If, however, you are a true lover of beautifull music, then this is a must buy. It really is a fantasic album that gets better with every listen.

This is a beautiful record that flows impeccably from beginning to end. It holds together as a collection of songs that complement each other and reward the listeners after repeated listens. Although it is a quite crude sounding album it does lend itself to headphone listening. As you become familiar with the songs you find yourself inhabiting them and sharing the angst that they, at times, portray. The lyrical structure is so simple, but it soon becomes apparent that the simplicity is the songs greatest strength. Tracks like 'Little Boy's Dream' 'You're Only Lonely' predominantly consist of just one phrase or couplet repeating for the duration of the song. The latter is like a mantra that builds into a stunning wall of sound and intensity. Although it does, ... Read More:

If you like Micah P Hinson then i don't see how you can not like this album. It isn't (and wasn't intended to be) a follow up to Gospel Of Progress, and as a collection of old songs inevitably sounds thinner and therefore more raw and less cinematic than either of his two full length albums, but this doesn't make it a bad record in it's own right. If anything it's a chance to hear his sound emerging, and there are some lovely songs on here.
If you don't have a Hinson record, then buy either (i'd suggest both) of the other two. Then when you've listened to them constantly for weeks and are hooked, come back and buy this. You won't be disappointed.
