I first came upon the wonderous music and string conjuring of Michael Hedges way, waaaay back when vinyl still out sold CD's, sadly many of my vinyl favourites are now in need of replacement by CD...but I digress.
If you have heard anything by Michael Hedges (even just a few bars)then you will have an inkling of what to expect - and yet there is so much more - if you haven't then let's say - You are one lucky person - Why? - Because there is a whole new wonderful world of incredible music and musicianship awaiting you.
Michael Hedges doesn't play guitar - he allows his dreams to come alive via strings beneath his fingers - like no one before has EVER done!
The Beauty of the compositions, the Dexterity and Artistry of the man ... Read More:

I first heard music from this record on the radio in 1984 while we were living in the US. I got the tape that Christmas, and played it constantly, amazed at the quality of the melody, arrangement and sound that it contained. My delight and astonishment was only enhanced when we saw Hedges in concert in London four or five years later. Right up until the point where he started playing it in front of us, I'd thought that there were two or three guitarists playing on the title track. The use of techniques like slap harmonics, tapping (with both hands) and percussive slapping on the guitar body is fairly widespread now, but they were almost unknown before Hedges started using them so assuredly.
But this record is more than a mere showcase ... Read More:

If you've never heard the man play then you are missing out on an important musical experience.
Michael Hedges was one of the best players to pick up a guitar. Sadly he died in December 1997 in a motor vehicle accident. His style was second to none - two handed playing, fabulous alternate tunings but most of all beautiful beautiful music.
Most reviews you read (Amazon included) tend to focus on his seminal 1984 album "Aerial Boundaries". I rate "Oracle" as just as important, just as amazing and just as beautiful. From the opening "The 2nd Law" to the closing "When I Was 4" his playing simply oozes out of your CD player. There's even a great version of Frank Zappa's classic song, "Sofa ... Read More:

This is the first record I've heard of Michael Hedges. I picked it up in a second hand store in Santa Cruz, California and to me the music on this disc whisks me back blissfully to those sunkissed shores! For me, music (and guitar playing in particular) shouldn't be about technique: Im interested in feeling, evocation, atmosphere, expression and beauty. This guy had all this without trying! I'd say I put this on a lot when I'm doing things like painting since it enhances one's imagination and stimulates the creative process. 'Dream Beach' for me is just pure bliss! Also, after about halfway through I find myself switching off the hi-fi: not because I'm tired od the music but because it makes me want to go and play geetar! To go retune it, thump it, slap it, ... The compositions on this album are thoughtful, melancholic (in an uplifting way) and occasionally joyful with moments of sheer transcendent brilliance. However there are a couple of tracks which are a tad self indulgent though nevertheless interesting! Michael Hedges is primarily a composer with virtuosic ability who uses every means he can to paint his musical pictures with the guitar whether it be strumming, picking, tapping, slapping, clever use of harmonics or alternative tunings. It is worth getting just for the magical moments in 'The Happy Couple' and 'Eleven Small Roaches' and the beautiful tribute to John Lennon 'Lenono' (check out the touching reference to 'Imagine' via the fretless bass of Michael Manring towards the end) alone. He went on to make ... Read More:
