I don't usually send reviews in for artists new to me as reckon those familiar with the artist in question are probably better placed to comment. Also to each his own and all that.
I bought this as I've been exploring some alternative country recently-Steve Earle, Jeff Tweedy, Laura Cantrell-etc. So in the light of the above reviews I thought I'd take a chance in the hope of finding a neglected gem. Instead I've had to wade through some of the most anaemic, bland songs I've heard in a long time. I don't think there is one stand out track, at least "Two different roads" has a reasonably pleasant melody and guitar part. Most of this reminds me of Bread or John Denver. At best its sub Richay Furay's Poco-a band I gave upon in the 70s when ... Read More:

it is a good buy because there are many rare tracks on this and of course some great stuff on the dvd none of which i have ever seen before.the music is fairly varied on the cd,only criticism would be that they are from too few releases-why not put stuff from 1970 onward and make it a complete retrospective?all in all though a very pleasurable listen.

This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful country albums of the 90s. Nez - after his romance with the Sythie-Pop of the 80s - got back home to his roots in the C&W area. In comparison with his golden work from the 70s, where he practically founded countryrock ("Nevada Fighter" just possibly being the best countryrock album of all times), the older Nez sounds relaxed and almost swinging, with clear tropical influences - as the title suggests. Especially wonderful are "Moon Over The Rio Grande" and "Twilight On The Trail" for beautiful melodies and poetic lyrics, and "I Am Not That" for the neztypical sense of humour. "One..." and "...For The Island" are an absolute innovation: the same song in two parts, once as a fascinating instrumental, then ... Read More:

this is absolutely nothing like the monkees so please don't pre-judge his solo stuff-this is a serious piece with a short book to read as you listen!!!i always finish the book too soon!i particularly like dance between the raindrops and life the unsuspecting captive.it is country music but it's strange too and you will always go back to it as a lot of it is hard to remember because it kinda washes over you at first.it is a good album to relax to and think about life(or read the book).
Release Date February 04, 2008
OK, this is really two reviews because the CD contains two very different albums. The only things they both have in common is that they are both purely instrumental and unlike anything else Nez has done.
The first is a relic from his Monkees days and consists of big band (think James Last rather than Duke Ellington) arrangements of some of his earlier songs, but so "horned up" that they are barely recognisable. To my ears it sounds like a big slice of self indulgence and will appeal to Nesmith completists and few others I suspect. This would get 2 stars on its own.
The other album is the soundtrack to a movie I've never heard of and is completely different. Its more modern and much more cohesive but unlike Nez normal style. It is ... Read More:

Nez always intended to do 3 sets of 3 disks. This contains the third of the first set and the first of the second. As such the styles are markedly different. 'Nevada Fighter' is classic early Nexz country Rock - I love his vesion of Nillson's Rainmaker - but 'Tantamount to Treason' is as close as Nez got to Psychodelia. There are some downright weird things on here - 'Highway 99 With Melange' being an example. But there are some classic Nez tracks here too. And if you only have the original vinyl then there are a few bonus tracks here too - I love both 'Rose City Chimes' and 'Cantata & Fugue in C&W'
