The Best Classical Album in the World...Ever!

from: Virgin TV

Release Date November 08, 2004
I have never been into classical music, however the TV programs Maestro and Last Choir standing (I know trash TV... sorry) made me realise I did like some classical music. So time to test that theory, and of course this CD fitted the bill perfectly, a bit of everything and 99% you will probably know. Good album, maybe I may have discovered culture :-)

The Very Best Of Michael Nyman: Film Music 1980 - 2001

from: Venture

Release Date August 19, 2002
This isn't the first example of Michael Nyman's cinema work I've bought - I fell in love with the score for The Piano, and I bought the soundtrack for Gattaca without every sitting through the whole film. This double CD is a brilliant opportunity to experience a whole raft of soundtracks he's been involved with over the 20-odd years this covers. Some of the individual film soundtracks sadly do not appear to be available, but even a single track as featured here for some films is better than nothing.

The first CD heavily features work from his many collaborations with Peter Greenaway, whilst the second features tracks accompanying a wider range of directors' work, and it's really fascinating to see the evolution of his style over ... Read More:

Classical Chillout

from: Virgin TV

Release Date September 10, 2001
This CD was given to me as a christmas present, but have only started listening to it recently. The first disc is the best with the chest burstingly beautiful "O mio babbino caro", but the second disk is heaving with relaxing hits. It really does do what it say's on the tin, the most relaxing CD on the market, the second being "Pure peace". I can only advise you to buy it now, if I am wrong you can resell it on amazon for almost it's purchase price and I am sure there will be many takers.

Moving On

by: Jon Cohen

Release Date October 20, 2003
I wish I had paid more heed to the only 1 star rating by 'a customer'. I too was very disappointed by this CD. I had expected full on concert style piano playing, instead of which I got 'one finger' style playing, very popular with the masses, but not very deep. If you like Clayderman, this may well please you.

Bryars: The Sinking of the Titanic: Jesus's Blood Never Failed Me Yet

from: Virgin Records

Release Date June 15, 1998
After Brian Eno had finished recording his third solo album "Another Green World" he approached the then , independent record label "Island " with a view to forming a new record label catering exclusively for the nascent experimental music scene. He wanted to promote music that otherwise ,wouldn't find an audience, but that would appeal to a select band of esoteric connoisseurs. Island , realising that there was a loyal following who would buy anything involving Eno , and trusting to his fecundity of ideas agreed, the low recording costs also appealing to their business senses. Eno named the label "Obscure " , astutely giving the label elite cache, and the first release on "Obscure" was Gavin Bryars double header "The Sinking Of The Titanic"/Jesus ... Read More:

Drowning By Numbers

from: Venture

Release Date March 22, 2004
I find it difficult to believe that no one has taken it upon themselves to review this extraordinary work and consider it a privilige to be the first person invited to do so.
I first became aware of Michael Nyman having been to see Peter Greenaway's Draughtsman Contract for which Nyman also composed the score. Although the film impressed me it was Drowning by Numbers that really moved me,both film and music. The film is excellent in its own right, but it is the music that makes it a masterpeice , and no doubt, some would argue vice versa. Invariably, soundtracks pale into insignificance when listened to without the film they were intended to accompany, not so this one, each track is a belter. It is debateable as to whether it is best to listen to the music ... Read More:

Wonderland

by: Michael Nyman

Release Date August 30, 1999
Quite simply this is the most sublime and heart achingly beautiful soundtrack I have ever heard. It will transport you completely. I saw the film and was struck by the music - and to listen to it again is rapturous. I can't recommend this highly enough. Don't be put off if you don't like The Piano music - I don't particularly. But if you like film scores like Glory then you'll love this.

The Essential Michael Nyman Band

from: Argo

Release Date November 10, 1992
Michael Nyman is a composer for our time. He's as valid to us as Bach must have been to his 18th century audience. Think about words that sum-up how we live our modern lives and they apply to Nyman's music: Immediate, brash, vibrant, pulsing, gimmicky, superficial, quick, surreal, humorous, accessible, severe, and very slightly pretentious... Nyman's music is as enjoyable as a walk through the city in the middle of Summer. It's modern life in sonic form.

Nyman heard how our modern brains work and produced music to match. I hesitate to say for fear of offence but there's an autistic quality about Nyman's work. I suspect future historians will record that autism and especially Asperger's Syndrome are (were) the illnesses that somehow best characterised our time, just ... Read More:
