Some beautiful composing on this particular cd, some top notch performances from all concerned. Highlight, for me , is 'Still There', a ballad featuring Stern's nylon acoustic (reminiscient of Metheny's many such settings) - beautifully paced and sensitively wrought. Musicians featured include bass players Richard Bona, Lincoln Goines and Chris Minh Doky, drummers/percussionists Atro Tuncboyaciyan, Vinnie Colaiuta and Dennis Chambers, vocalists Elizabeth Kontomanou, Phillip Hamilton, keyboard player Jim Beard and saxophoinists Michael Breacker and Bob Francheschini. this is stern's best album in my opinion. There is a diverse collection of songs here- all instrumental within a group setting., ranging from the hard hitting jazz rock to the softly melodic aka pat metheny (Stern's teacher at berkeley college of music). This is a good starting place if u want to explore this talented guitarist. Also check out the album "standards" for the lighter more jazzy side of Mike Stern.

Who Let the Cats Out?

this is stern's best album in my opinion. There is a diverse collection of songs here- all instrumental within a group setting., ranging from the hard hitting jazz rock to the softly melodic aka pat metheny (Stern's teacher at berkeley college of music). This is a good starting place if u want to explore this talented guitarist. Also check out the album "standards" for the lighter more jazzy side of Mike Stern.

"Give and Take" sees Mike Stern, known more today as a fusion guitarist, return to a straighter jazz set-up. The carefully chosen line-up of Jack DeJohnette, John Pattitucci, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, David Sanborn and Gil Goldstein forms a strong basis for a collection of Stern's own compositions, interspersed by a few standards. On this offering, Mike Stern is joined by two of his contemporaries, Bill Frisell and John Scofield, and together with an exceptional band including Lincoln Goines on bass and the incredible Dennis Chambers on drums, they have produced easily Mike's finest recordings to date. Mind you, although his guests make welcome contributions to the fusion fest, this is very much Mike's show both with his guitar and his pen -- from the syncopations of the title track through the funk-fusion of Tipatina's to the achingly lovely All Heart, this is the sound of a guitarist reaching another level of mastery, and having a great time doing it.
