This is a Jazz album that everyone should have in their collection. The Oscar Peterson Trio is joined Milt Jackson and what a beautiful album they create together.
Recorded in 1961 the album starts with On Green Dolphin Street. This is mellow and laid back for a while and then changes gear to swing. Perhaps the most noticeable thing about this track is Peterson's very restrained and delicate Piano solo. Even when the solo reaches the swing section there aren't the torrents of notes that you might expect. This is Oscar Peterson showing a different facet to his great talent.
Of course part of the reason for Petersons restraint on the first track maybe because a couple of the other tracks are absolute barnstormers. In ... Read More:

Milt Jackson is heard in two sessions. First session by a nine piece group with Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Art Blakey and others, arrangements by Quincy Jones. The second session a sextet date with Joe Newman, Lucky Thompson, Horace Silver among others. Fine solos by all, Milt Jackson in his usual good form and Adderley, Newman and Thompson equally good, maybe better!

This album is just so much fun - you can tell they enjoyed recording it together. The tracks (especially the title track) just put you in the right mood. This is an 'equally matched' album in the sense that they all (including Wynton Kelly and Art Blakey) get their fair share of the limelight with fantastic solos. A real 'feelgood' top quality album.

This recording is a chance to hear 3 Jazz masters late in their careers. The Very Tall band is a reference to the album they recorded in 1962 as "Very Tall The Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson", which incidentally is a fabulous album.
So does this live up to the very high standards they set 36 years ago. Well the simple answer is no. The loss of the use of his left hand means that Oscar Peterson is no longer quite the powerhouse rhythm player that he was before the stroke. Also just occasionally there is a fragility to his right hand lines that perhaps you wouldn't pick up on if his left hand was fully functioning. As the previous reviewer said age is not kind sometimes.
However this IS a lovely album. Ray Brown ... Read More:

Another classic reissue for Oscar Petersons 80th Birthday (two years ago now). This album was recorded in 1971 and not only features Ray Brown on Bass and Louis Hayes on drums, but also the great Milt Jackson on Vibes.
The album kicks off with a version of Satisfaction (the Stones tune). Jackson and Peterson take good solos, but I wonder if they really wanted this on the album because there is a fade at the end of the track, which is quite unusual for a Jazz album. Maybe the producers wanted it, rather than the musicians. However the remaining tracks are firmly jazz standards. Theres a fine version of "Someday my Prince will come". "When I Fall In Love" is a beautifully played ballad where all the musicians shine and it might be the ... Read More:
