Vintage: the Very Best of Moby Grape

by: Moby Grape

Release Date June 03, 1996
I decided to write this review because I was intrigued by the magazines reviews about the re-release of the Moby Grape albums.
If you buy this anthology - which is still easily available (notwithstanding what you may read on the contrary!) - you have an excellent introduction with the entire first album represented and therefore you can make your mind whether or not spend more money on the single albums.
Definitely recommended and then, once you've listened through the two CDS, you will decided if you want to hear more or not.
Great liner notes as well.

Moby Grape 1969

by: Moby Grape

Release Date November 09, 2007
Moby Grape 69 was definitely the best album that they delivered. Without a major contribution from Skip Spence (his only presence on this album is 'Seeing') the songs work very well. Quite frankly, the other four were better off without him, given the demolition job he did at the end of the superb 'Bitter Wind', and the totally ludicrous 'Just Like Gene Autrey, a Foxtrot (what the hell was he thinking!?). Set in a true context, Spence was a disruptive, rather than creative, force within the band. The creative writing of the others comes to the fore on '69' and songs like 'It's a Beautiful Day Today', and 'If You Can't Learn From My Mistakes' are masterclasses in how to use guitars to enhance a song to its maximum. Lewis and Miller work ... Read More:

Truly Fine Citizen

by: Moby Grape

Release Date November 09, 2007
There are two absolute gems on this album, 'Changes, circles spinning', 'Right before my eyes'. And they're not on the excellent 'Vintage' compilation, so you'll have to buy the album just for these two - but oh, are they worth it!
A third, 'Now I know high' is fine at the start and the end; pity about the extended meandering instrumental bit in the middle. 'Treat me bad' is middling; 'Truly fine citizen' is weak, and the rest is plain awful.
Warning: the last nine tracks were not on the original record, so I don't know anything about them. Apart from 'Skip's song', which is the same as 'Seeing' from the album 69 - and known from a Robert Plant cover, too!

Moby Grape [VINYL]

by: Moby Grape

Release Date October 15, 2007
I listen to a lot of music, but after all these years this is still one of my favourites. It is a really tightly crafted album - all songs are jewels in their own right; what's more, they're in a sequence that makes perfect sense. A range of styles, from easygoing (Fall on you) to raw (Mr Blues) to sensitive (8:05, Sitting by the window) to screeching rock (Omaha), and still a unit that keeps on growing on you. All five contribute their vital parts that makes for a tight sound that represents the very best of West Coast rock, from the rockhard drums of Stevenson to the very distinct voices of Mosley and Lewis, to the perfect guitar work of Jerry Miller - I once took out an ad in the Dutch mag 'Aloha' to state that Miller is the best guitar player in ... Wow

by: Moby Grape

Release Date October 09, 2007
Before I ever heard any of their songs, I knew of Moby Grape by reputation -- the quintessential 60's band that had an incredible first album, the success of which they could never top, and they flamed out big time. I always wondered how that momentum was halted and how such a highly regarded band could flop.

That brings us to "Wow." Until recently, I had never heard anything other than their first album, which was pretty darn good and serves as a great late 60's timepiece. When getting ready to listen to "Wow," I prepared myself for dull, boring, tuneless 60's psychedelia. I must say I was truly blown away by how good this entire CD was. I dare say it's just as good as the debut album. Great harmonies, tight playing and arrangements, and great instrumentation ... Read More:
