Having always been a fan of Moby's earlier productions, it was nice to see he's best of album getting the remixed treatment, to bring it bang up to date with today's sounds. And it's a good job. The remixes in question really do vary, and will satisfy many fans of different genres. Whether it the trance sound of Ferry Corsten, or the housier sound of Mylo and Sandy Rivera, there really is something for everyone.

Like most people Moby first came to my attention when he brought out Play, since then I have been a fan of his and this double disc album is fantastic. The first disc is great...it is perfect for working to or to just relax to. The second disc is incredibly chilled, with no lyrics on it is perfect background music if you like your 'electronic-chill'. This is a great album and I would insist its a must for Moby lovers. It is the first album for a long time that I have put straight back on after first listening to it. Its only draw back is that it is under an hour...but i guess it's 'quality not quantity' that matters!

I decided to write this review because I was intrigued by the magazines reviews about the re-release of the Moby Grape albums.
If you buy this anthology - which is still easily available (notwithstanding what you may read on the contrary!) - you have an excellent introduction with the entire first album represented and therefore you can make your mind whether or not spend more money on the single albums.
Definitely recommended and then, once you've listened through the two CDS, you will decided if you want to hear more or not.
Great liner notes as well.

If you like the 'Bourne' movie trilogy and wondered what the catchy track
was that plays when the credits roll, then look no further, 'Extreme Ways' is it !.
The second track on this single is fair, the last the poorest.
Oh yes, there's a music video for Extreme Ways on the cd too.

Reasonable summary of the best of Moby. Some key tracks missing, and some others remixed annoyingly. But overall am pleased with the album.

Moby Grape 69 was definitely the best album that they delivered. Without a major contribution from Skip Spence (his only presence on this album is 'Seeing') the songs work very well. Quite frankly, the other four were better off without him, given the demolition job he did at the end of the superb 'Bitter Wind', and the totally ludicrous 'Just Like Gene Autrey, a Foxtrot (what the hell was he thinking!?). Set in a true context, Spence was a disruptive, rather than creative, force within the band. The creative writing of the others comes to the fore on '69' and songs like 'It's a Beautiful Day Today', and 'If You Can't Learn From My Mistakes' are masterclasses in how to use guitars to enhance a song to its maximum. Lewis and Miller work together superbly ... Read More:

This is a fantastic album. It is lively and catchy at the start, and gradually becomes soothing and quite tranquil. I think that this album covers a wide range of tastes, and when I first got the album I didn't like some of the tracks, but what I found was that after a few days, I began to love them. EXCELLENT MUSIC ALL ROUND HERE!

It's not what you expect. Sure. The trend is for people to go back, start doing the type of stuff they did when nobody liked them, get back to their roots, keep it real. Hardcore. And still try to bring everyone along with them.
People don't do it like this. They don't just release an album with no publicity, no interviews, under a secret name, with only two mentions of who they really are on the whole thing. And then slip it quietly into the stores.
So "Baby Monkey", the second album in an erratic series of releases by Moby under the moniker of Voodoo Child. Back in the early 90's, when Moby was the only guy signed to the Instinct label, he did stuff like this all the time. He recorded under dozens of names - Brainstorm, Barracuda, Voodoo ... Read More:

There are two absolute gems on this album, 'Changes, circles spinning', 'Right before my eyes'. And they're not on the excellent 'Vintage' compilation, so you'll have to buy the album just for these two - but oh, are they worth it!
A third, 'Now I know high' is fine at the start and the end; pity about the extended meandering instrumental bit in the middle. 'Treat me bad' is middling; 'Truly fine citizen' is weak, and the rest is plain awful.
Warning: the last nine tracks were not on the original record, so I don't know anything about them. Apart from 'Skip's song', which is the same as 'Seeing' from the album 69 - and known from a Robert Plant cover, too!

Since this is one MOBY's first CD's, one cannot be too tough on him. However, the term ambient (penned by Brian Eno in the Seventies) used to mean multi-layered, ethereal space/mood music. Moby keeps the layers and the moods, but the constant percussion (it's good) keep it from being anything but relaxing. This represents a good foreshadowing of what moby was to produce.
