Ambient

Since this is one MOBY's first CD's, one cannot be too tough on him. However, the term ambient (penned by Brian Eno in the Seventies) used to mean multi-layered, ethereal space/mood music. Moby keeps the layers and the moods, but the constant percussion (it's good) keep it from being anything but relaxing. This represents a good foreshadowing of what moby was to produce.

Everything Is Wrong : DJ Mix Album

This isn't consistently brilliant like Play or consistently good like 18, but it does have some simply outstanding material on it. The opening Hymm, for exapmple, and Into the Blue, God Moving Over the Face of the Waters and When it's Cold I like to Die. Those are the dreamy, whistful spacey ones. Also exceptional is Everytime You Touch Me, and I don't usually like that sort of thumping club music. It's tracks like All That I Need is to be Loved that I don't like. I find them discordant and jarring.

As with the 18 DVD, the main feature is a concert, this time from Leuven. An hour and fifty two minutes, and Moby and his band are on fine form throughout. Well filmed, good sound, great music. What more could you want?
The extras? Three additional filmed live recordings, five videos, a short 'tour film' and, of course, Mr Fish.
As with both the Play and 18 DVDs, you also get a CD full of remixes.
An all round excellent DVD.

Baby Monkey

It's not what you expect. Sure. The trend is for people to go back, start doing the type of stuff they did when nobody liked them, get back to their roots, keep it real. Hardcore. And still try to bring everyone along with them.

People don't do it like this. They don't just release an album with no publicity, no interviews, under a secret name, with only two mentions of who they really are on the whole thing. And then slip it quietly into the stores.

Wow

Before I ever heard any of their songs, I knew of Moby Grape by reputation -- the quintessential 60's band that had an incredible first album, the success of which they could never top, and they flamed out big time. I always wondered how that momentum was halted and how such a highly regarded band could flop.

That brings us to "Wow." Until recently, I had never heard anything other than their first album, which was pretty darn good and serves as a great late 60's timepiece. When getting ready to listen to "Wow," I prepared myself for dull, boring, tuneless 60's psychedelia. I must say I was truly blown away by how good this entire CD was. Truly Fine Citizen

There are two absolute gems on this album, 'Changes, circles spinning', 'Right before my eyes'. And they're not on the excellent 'Vintage' compilation, so you'll have to buy the album just for these two - but oh, are they worth it!
A third, 'Now I know high' is fine at the start and the end; pity about the extended meandering instrumental bit in the middle. 'Treat me bad' is middling; 'Truly fine citizen' is weak, and the rest is plain awful.
Warning: the last nine tracks were not on the original record, so I don't know anything about them. Apart from 'Skip's song', which is the same as 'Seeing' from the album 69 - and known from a Robert Plant cover, too!

Most people know of this album, indeed most people probably own it by now! So, I won't review the tracks or album as a whole, as this has probably been done better elsewhere and many times before. I bought it when it actually came out, back in 1999, to poor reviews and little fanfare. (A fact many people don't know). I even bought all the singles, as I have nearly all of Moby's singles to date; so why do you ask, did I buy it again, when I probably have all the tracks anyway?
Well, as you can probably deduce, I'm a bit of a Moby fan and collector, having gotten the bug when 'Everything is Wrong' came out.
